looking for my first mk5
« on: June 09, 2017, 09:57:30 am »
Hi all. New here and hello. I've owned a lovely tuned and rebuilt mk2 for many years and now its time to join the modern(ish) world and get my first mk5  for a daily driver. I'm aware of many of the well documented problem areas like faulty valves, cam follower wear, rusty front wings etc, but I wanted to first ask (after reading buying guides that recommend avoiding) is the interior quality of the 04 cars that much of a problem ?

Earlier MK5's (2004-2005) had a rubber-like coating on their interior trims such as door handles which badly wears off over time, this also affects switches such as lights, electric windows and radio knobs. The rear boot badge of this era is also prone to white worming should the lacquer gets chipped or damaged.

Though if you do get a good deal on an earlier MK5 then I wouldn't discount them based on the interior alone as fortunately they are replaceable with more durable parts from the later MK5's and even MK6 Golf's.

The Golf MK6 switches (lights and windows) are much nicer with the chrome tips and are plug and play, a complete set can be obtained for less than £30 these days.

The later MK5 interior grab handles does away the rubber coating so it no longer suffer from the peeling problem, I would advise getting them from the dealer/TPS as they are surprisingly cheaper than what you get from eBay (about £14 ish).

Also the later MK5 and MK6 Golf's uses the 3D boot badge emblem design so no longer suffers from white worming, check the scrappers or eBay for these with prices vary from £20-50.

thanks Patchy. very helpful info and good to know all the bits are relatively easily swapped out and not to discount the earlier cars.

Some specs of the 04/05 cars also have a light grey carpet which doesnt go well with the dark anthracite plastics and trims, where most later ones have a completely black carpet.

The easy way to tell an early car is even the base model ones have dark headlights like the GTis, they also have a 4 spoke steering wheel, and the gear lever gaiter clips directly into the console, it doesnt have a plastic trim surround to clip into which then clips into the console. I think the 55 plate seems to be when they changed from the rubber coated plastics and so on.

TBH, they are common enough and cheap enough now that a later one shouldnt be too expensive, especially because even the latest mk5s are now 9 years old. I also dont think there were ever any 53 or 04 plate GTis, possibly not even 54 plates, earliest GTis ive seen are 05s.

If you go for a diesel, seemingly the CR TDis are much better than the earlier PD TDis, however the PD ones dont have a DPF to cause problems which to me is a massive plus point for buying a PD (I own a CR 2.0 Jetta and have had a few DPF faults and issues)

Dont get a base spec, still well screwed together interiors, but even the midrange ones feel vastly better to sit in, Match, GT or GT Sport spec would be my choice. S, Sport and SE are a bit too basic for my tastes. things like lowline display, no trip computer, no check control (low oil, bulb failure warnings etc.) no rear electric windows, no twin sunvisors with mirrors and lights, no ambient lights, rear armrest, front armrest with rear heating ducts, no rain sensor, auto lights, auto dim interior mirror, stuff like that which just make it a nicer place to be.

All the better if you can find one specced from new with options or even already modified with upgraded stuff, things like highline clocks, MFSW, MDI, bluetooth, better stereo like RNS315, RNS510, RCD510, because like most of us will want to add it.

Fair enough, youll probably find you get much more GT TDi for your money than a GTi, even early, high mileage, scruffy, poorly specced GTis still command big money. As youll see on here, upgrades and retrofits are common but still try and big the highest spec one you can because parts arent cheap.

The GT TDI to have is the post 2008 GT Sport TDi, as its got heated leather, quite often climate control, dark headlights, GTi front bumper with different grilles.
