Washed engine bay. Now no power/ boost?
« on: June 17, 2017, 10:57:44 am »
Hi guys. Suffering from a great deal of regret today as i gave my bay a quick wash down yesterday. I'd normally just use APC then wipe it off with a cloth but stupidly decided to use the hose to rinse it off this time

Straight away i took it for a drive to get rid of any excess water.. and... Serious lack of power. This happened before, shortly after buying the car. seemed to go into a limp mode, feels like its missing 100hp.

I replaced the usuals last year.. DV, pcv. Checked the dv yesterday and all is fine.

Im guessing water has got into a sensor/ plug somewhere.

Any ideas?

Can still hear the turbo spool/ dump (i have a Ramair induction kit) but Doesn't sound as if its up to max (normal) pressure.

No other out of the ordinary noises, smells etc. and no warning lights. Just very, very slow.

Thanks.

Not that i can see. Just disconnected the battery for 5 mins, went for a drive and seemed to have full power for all of about 200 yards before it dropped off again.

Have you driven it much since? if not start it and let it tick over for 15 minutes the heat will let the engine dry out fully.
The only think a hose will affect in the engine bay is the electrics so alternator, distributor and fuse box. In the future just put a plastic bag around them and tape it and you'll have no problem with a hose.

Yeah, I've driven it a few times for 10-15 mins a time to try it. The alternator would've got very little if any water on it when i washed it so can't think its that, i was fairly careful to avoid obvious areas that wouldn't like water. Fuse box seems completely dry and checked all fuses and same with battery. Just driven it again and does almost seem like a boost leak. Get the initial kick in from the turbo at 2-2.5k then it just doesn't increase at all. And the dump sound sounds a lot weaker. Cant see how water can cause a boost leak but perhaps its coincidence!

Could've just knocked it and it was already a bit loose

So, just driven to the pub, decided to try it on the A road rather than back roads. Was on the road for 3 miles, slowed down to let a van in front turn off. Dropped it into 4th and pulled hard back up to speed (60 of course) Seems fine now, very strange!
