Not-so-full history?

Hi everyone.

I've just bought a 2005 Mk5 GTi (6 speed manual) with 103,000 on the clock. It came with what was billed as full service history - dealer stamps and details in the book, and some receipts/invoices etc. This confirmed that the cambelt etc. has been done a couple of times, including last year, so that's all good. However, there's no record of the clutch being changed. I understand this should be done at around 100k; however looking a bit closer, there's no mention of things like the battery being changed, but it's clearly not 10 years old. Is there any way I can find out if the clutch has been done without taking it apart? Contact VW, or the previous owner from the log book?

Ok. Clutch could last 200k miles, or 50k miles - its dependant on use, and certainly NOT something you would expect to see in the service history book. Its not a scheduled item, just like brake disks arent. If the clcutch isnt slipping, i wouldnt worry. . .

Battery - usually last 6-9years, not something i'd expect to see in a service history pack, unless someone was very thorough. Easy one to check though

I've got a 2.0 TDI and I only changed my clutch after 304.000 KILOMETERS / 188.896 MILES. And that was only since I got the cap remapped I changed it :)

unless its slipping or the clutch biting point is really high up the pedal your clutch should be ok at least until you end up increasing the power if thats what you want to do then it'd be suggested to change the clutch in any case

Thanks everyone. Biting point is reasonable and no sign of it slipping, so I'll cross the clutch off my list of things to worry about. Excellent news!
