New Ipod

I put this in the mk7 area but I think it's a bit quiet there and also this applies to the mk6 I think and some retrofitted stereos in the mk5. I will try to remove the other thread or the mods can remove it.
I have a 2013 golf. I am about to buy a new ipod but I see they now have a lightning connection.
I use my old ipod in the car and control it via the stereo (i.e. artist/album etc.).
I have the basic mk7 stereo. I have the old ipod lead. I have been to vw and there are 2 types on lightning lead. I have been to Currys and there is an adaptor I can use for my current lead.
Can I use the new ipod via blutooth? Or a cable? Or the adaptor?
VW just said we will have to buy in the cables and try but at £43 or £80 for that option I thought I would ask here first.

I've got the official apple adapter on my one (30 pin to lightening) costs about £30 but it works fine. Charges my iPhone and you can still control music through the radio controls - this is on my mk5, although I'm sure it will work for you too.
