Painting Grill Red Strip?
« on: July 21, 2017, 10:14:55 am »
Hi all,

After reading through the discussion on using plastidip on the honeycomb grill, I will definitely be doing this the next chance I get a few hours spare.  I had a look at my red grill strip today and noticed that it was looking a bit tired as well.  Thought I may as well sort this at the same time.

Just wondering if anyone has done this already and if so how it was done.  I had a look on eBay and can only find matt red plastidip which I doubt will make the strip stand out.  Was thinking it may be a rub down job then paint with a gloss finish.  If this is the case does anyone have any tips on how to get the best finish as the last thing I spray painted was an old BMX I had about 20 years ago?  Tips on what to use to rub down, should I use primer before the gloss finish, reckon I would then finish with lacquer.

Any help and tips are greatly appreciated.    :happy2:

Clean off with IPA
Fill any stone chips
Very light sand with 1800 grit to give a better bonding surface
Clean off with IPA once more before painting
VHT red paint spray x 3 fine coats
Clear lacquer x 3 fine coats
Leave 30mins between coats and remember that less is more.

Red vinyl wrap might be a good shout?

You can get a grille off eBay for around £30 so for the effort of spraying the strip and buying paint, laquer and sandpaper + time and effort you would probably be nearer the price of just buying a grille. Just my 2p.

All good shouts.  New grill may be the an option, just worried the fit might not be as good.

Thanks for the run down on painting @lukemk5gti , also vinyl wrap may be an idea.
