Wet passenger footwell...
« on: May 01, 2012, 07:06:43 pm »
Found out today that my passenger footwell is completely soaked, its just in the front footwell only, all the drain holes seem clear in the scuttle, door seals all seem good, its smells nasty at the min with this horrible damp smell, my car is a 5-door with no sunroof, trying to think where else to check, with it being damp in there the windows mist up quickly, I did have the pollen filter changed a few months ago too.

Any ideas??  :happy2:

look underneath the glove box where the pollen filter goes as it might be coming through thier-which mean under the bonnet where the wiper motor is the drain holes might be blocked

All seems ok, I've taken off the side trim panels and pulled up the carpet a little bit, the foam underlay when you squeeze it has lots of water soaked in it, I've shoved a towel under there to try and dry some of it out, just don't get where its coming from, the garage had a good look over it earlier and couldn't see anything obvious, matrix pipes are dry, looks like just water in the carpets rather than coolant although I do have a strange coolant loss issue although I don't think its connected.

I have the same issue with my Jetta but can not for the life of me figure where the water is coming from. It smells like water so have ruiled out a dodgy heater matrix so it must be an issue with the drainage channels, possibly blocked and water is backing up into the cabin filter housing and exiting into the footwell.

If the rain holds off this weeken i will be investigating

probably need to remove the door card, pull out the inner panel that keeps water from the window inside the door. When it gets older the lower sticky stuff fails and water can ingress to the interior of the car. Follow the guide half way down this page:

that works for Mk4 golfs (had to do it to mine - the drivers door had failed). I would put money on the same problem for mk5's. You need proper BUTYL sealant. I got mine from here:

here's the first page of the above guide explaining the problem:

I believe you are wrong on this one. Have you ever taken door card off from MKV?
I had same issue with my Passat B5.5, seal failed on bottom of aluminium plate and water was coming to footwells.
MK5 doors are different to older vag cars. You won't see aluminium plate, or any sealant behind door card.

But it is worth to check rubber round cable seals.

My passenger floor is wet after rain, after spending ages outside with the hose pipe I finally found the problem so I thought I'd share it.

Water trickles down the passenger side of the screen and over the scuttle to where the inlet for the fresh air is located and then flows into there running down through the fan and onto the carpets....

not sure why this happens unless the scuttle isn't in the correct place after a replacement screen..
