MK5 or Mk6

Hi guys

I'm in a quandary, I am currently saving up for either a Mk5 or MK6 Gti, I cannot decided

Mk5 will be cheaper and if I saved a bit more get myself into a ED30

MK6 is more expensive but prices are starting to converge with the MK5

My budget would be around 6k maybe up to 9k, is the MK6 worth the premium? The interior is better and its a bit newer with the TSI engine but is it worth saving for?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

I think the early mk6's had major issues with the cam chains failing and taking out the engine. Fixable with the updated parts but it'll be a fair bit of money.

You'll get a good mk5 for your budget or a ropy mk6 basically

Seems to be quite a few around the 80k miles area, just under average mileage for their age

Correct.  Tensioners failed.  There was apparently a revised tensioner fitted at the factory from 2011 or 12 (not sure which) on.  If buying a pre-2011/12, definitely check the revised tensioner has been fitted.

Personally I found next to no difference in the drive experience between mks 5 & 6 GTI, except for the electronic diff on the 6 which allowed better traction at corner exit.  Mk6s have a classier interior (IMO) but otherwise I prefer the looks of the Mk5.

I always avoid incremental updates and just go with the major release, so that would be MK1> MK2> MK4> MK5> MK7> MK8.   MK3 was nasty and just a MK2 with a new skirt.  MK6 is really just a MK5.5 and the MK7.5 is a superficial make over too, with a couple of improved mechanicals sprinkled on to make the effort worthwhile.

My advice - get the Edition 30, as late and unmolested as possible.  Or keep saving and get a MK7 with the EA888.3 engine in it as it's a proper barn stormer, featuring real VTEC on both cams, among other things.

I'd be so wary of the early GTI6, interesting how they didn't use that lump in the 6R - better interior, worse exterior, not worth the premium imho - GTI7, or GTI5 esp with CDL heart

Another vote here for the Edition 30. I can't think of anything other than a 7R that would float my boat.

Edition 30 for sure, but also there's a mk6 GTD golf from Volkswagen in England forget which one look on Das Welt Auto, it has 13 or 16k miles on it and they're looking 12k for it. Has sunroof and leather if I remember correctly

Get a 1.4 SE and save up for 9 years and then get a Club Sport 50 lol

Clubsport 50 will likely be full electric......and waaaaay faster than any current Golf
