Is it turning over?

If not it, it'll be an electrical issue or immobiliser. If it is turning over its probably a fueling or spark issue.

Timing chain tensioner at gearbox end failed and bent the valves? What was the engine management code?

Vaguer than vague.  Just let your mechanic deal with it.  It's f'cked.

I'm going to. He is putting a compression tester on it today and going from there. He did mention that chain as a possible culprit this sounds complicated and expensive

I thought he already established there was zero compression?

If the starter motor tone is a constant whirring tone, either the belt or chain has snapped.   If there's a bit of the normal "Whuh whuh whuh...." noise on cranking, at least one cylinder still has compression.

Ask your mechanic what "chain" he is referring too?
The engine must be turning over to conduct a compression test right? If this is the case we can assume the engine drive belt is still in tact?
More precise information required for further assistance I'm afraid, is the mechanic a VW specialist?
