hello i am looking to buy my son a golf mk5 GTI with over 100.000 miles. It will be a DSG model. Are there any known problems with high miliage ones to look out for? if so are they big ones?

You could find issues with lesser mileage cars too to be honest. I guess t depends on how well the car has been maintained.

Rusty arches are common on these, check to see if the DSG has been serviced and the cam belt and water pump has been done and a well documented service history.

The cam chain does start to get a little noisy around that mileage and also keep an eye out for loosing boost (possible torn diverter valve) rough idling (possible PCV) and if you do buy it I would get the cam follower checked as soon as possible. Another issue I found was common was sticky calipers (rear) and misfires in cylinders. The misfire could be down to dodgy coil packs, spark plugs or worst case, an injector issue.

Good luck - but don’t let this put you off it’s a great car. As said these issues could happen to lower mileage cars too. It just depends on how well the cars been looked after.

Out of curiosity how much were you spending on it? Mines don’t over 100k and was contemplating selling it so just interested to see what sort of money they are going for

Mines on 145k and running well   
As stated above, if it's been well maintained you shouldn't really need worry about it. My mileage is so high as it was used to go up and down the motorway for 4 years, raking up 98k easy motorway miles in 4 years

The cars we have looked at are
1) 104000 miles and £3900
2) 111000 miles and £ 3700.

Both cars are 2005 models

I purchased mine in June with 130k miles, 2008, 1 owner for £3500. I've changed;

cam follower- was worn but not badly

disks and pads- I always do this on used cars

Coilpacks- slight misfire but all good now

Cambelt and water pump- last documented at 80k around 4 years ago so needed doing

Current issue is a code p0141, I've changed the mani o2 sensor and will most likely change the post cat one.

Other then the above the car is awesome and don't be put off by mileage, as has already been said a good service history out weighs mileage for me. Also higher mileage cars are most likely to of already had most minor problems already fixed.

I'd try and get a BWA rather than AXX engine just a bit stronger if you plan any tuning.

My edition30 has done 129k and it honestly runs like new. No rattles from car and engine perfect

My last vrs had 157k when I got it and was a better driving car than my current one which had 95k. The old one obviously had some cash spent on it before I got it.

Mine's on 169,000 & still feels fresh as a daisy! All that I've replaced are:

Rear brake caliper
Boot lock
Interior fan housing

I've had the air con re-gassed twice, and as well as having it serviced regularly, it runs perfect. Just want my seat re-bolstering & a new exhaust (Slight blow), that'll be me until the 200,000 mark!
