Losing oil at a fast rate!
« on: August 28, 2017, 02:16:51 pm »
My mk5 GTI burns a lot of oil since monitoring it every 100 miles I noticed gone down in 600 miles to a quarter full any common faults with oil consumption or advice?

Have you checked the simple stuff first? As in leaks from sump nut etc? Any viable signs of leakage around engine? Oil stains on driveway?

Yeah no obvious signs of external leaking and there isnt really any smoke coming out of the exhaust tbh

1/4 left in the sump, or 1/4 way up the min-max mark?  I think it's important to establish which!

If the latter, that's a litre over 1000 miles, which is within VW's tolerance and also considered 'normal' in the GTI community for an AXX engine.

Some use a lot less though, and there's no rhyme or reason to it.

I had always assumed that 1/4 on the dipstick was 1/4 left in the tank.... is this not the case then?

There is plenty of oil in the sump way below the min mark.   The hatched area on the dipstick (1 litre) is just to make sure customers don't over or under fill the engine.  In this case, it's 750ml under-filled from max, but still within allowance.

I've known quite a few people run their engines with no oil showing on the dipstick at all, and they survived.   They got a stern bollocking from me though

I will probably get a bollocking for saying this, but 90% of said people were female

Confirming, that any oil within the range of the x-hatching is good...and that area only measures about 1 L from top to bottom. If and/or when your oil is being lost at a quicker rate in the future...you will see smoke in your exhaust while driving normally or under boost. Most likely will be due to failing/aged valve stem seals and guides, worn or stuck rings, or the turbo's bearing seal is shot.

Yeah, some full syn oils are better than others. Depends what you want to spend now vs later...sometimes. Someone suggested I use their brand once...I looked it up and found it to be $80usd/5Lt...:surprised:
I found a full syn costing less and is better...I used Castrol full syn @ $43usd/5L (VWoA recommended) for years but recently switched to LiquiMoly @ $34usd/5Lt and it nearly doubled the cam follower life from every 10k miles to 20k miles. So I believe in good quality full syn oils.

My engine seems to get along with Mobil 1 0W40.  Decent and reasonably priced.
