Replacing Camshaft after about 70k miles?

Hello,

My first post on this forum.

I bought a Mk5 GTI Wwith 68k miles in Feb following a positive AA Inspection.  I've done about 3k miles and following the engine warning light coming on permenantly and then going off, took it it VW main agents (who looked after my VR6 for 9+ years), who have diagnosed that it needs a new camshaft.  The timing belt was replaced at 55k before I bought the car.

Is this usual mileage for a replacement camshaft?

It depends on how early it was manufactured. I am aware that some early MK5's were able to destroy themselves as early as 40k miles. I wish VW had just done a recall on all of these and replaced the hpfp with a roller cam follower conversion...exactly what they designed and put in the TSI. Unfortunately there is no way to warn everyone of the flat cam follower should be replaced when you buy one if under 100k miles, and replace the CF every ??k or ???k miles of your choice thereafter. If you buy one over 100k miles...you can bet the CF is nearly, if not already, shot.
