I think PB's aim was to hold businesses and other people who didn't keep backups of their images to ransom. It's ethically and morally abhorrent, but not really a surprising move in the current climate. I just hope other companies don't follow suit.
It's been my thinking for some time, that once your stuff is 'in the cloud', you're left vulnerable to hacking and underhand tactics like PB's. So I have backups of backups stored on backups, which are backed up once a week, on my main backup, which is also backed up, just in case.
It's like social media. If there is something you don't want others getting hold or seeing, don't post it.
