Bye Bye photobucket
« on: September 04, 2017, 12:59:04 pm »
Photobucket have wrecked this forum so many good threads ruined with missing pics. I've had enough of this image.

I've written a script to scrape images out of photobucket, this is going to take some time 1500 images copied so for if anyone has any objections to their images being copied and links updated please let me know. (only images on this forum will be copied not your complete photobucket account).

Agreed, its a particulary ugly image isnt it! Grr I dont know what they have achieved here, I struggle to believe anyone will pay for the service. Have they not just run themselves out of business?

Maybe hopefully they will all be gone soon. Providing people don't continue to use photobucket images in posts.

They will probably make millions even if 1% of people pay.

No objections from me, what a top man for offering this!

I think PB's aim was to hold businesses and other people who didn't keep backups of their images to ransom.  It's ethically and morally abhorrent, but not really a surprising move in the current climate.  I just hope other companies don't follow suit.

It's been my thinking for some time, that once your stuff is 'in the cloud', you're left vulnerable to hacking and underhand tactics like PB's.  So I have backups of backups stored on backups, which are backed up once a week, on my main backup, which is also backed up, just in case.

It's like social media.  If there is something you don't want others getting hold or seeing, don't post it.

Well done Dazza, couple of other forums I'm on have done or are doing the same thing. Are you hosting them permanently or just for the purpose of scraping them from photobucket?

I imagine it will take quite some time, hopefully your script will weed out and remove the duplicates too or I dread to think how many images you'll have  :signLOL:

Will your script update the existing posts with the new link, you know, since you have Admin privileges and all that?

It should be permanent providing there is enough space we should be moving the entire site to this server one day soon.

The script copies the images and parent folder name to the new server then updates the image link in the post. It does not replace the clickable link that some of these are wrapped in but it should be much better. There could be a balls up if people happen to be using the same parent folder name and image name lets see what happens.
