Vw sat nav/ stereo help
« on: September 05, 2017, 06:49:09 pm »
Hi all ,

Picking a lovely forum members car up tomorrow ( silver gti Pirelli) and it's coming with a single don aftermarket head unit . I would ideally love to get a vw ( or vw style ) double din unit that fits the whole area ( like you got from the factory if specced )

My questions are :

Where can I get one?
Which one would you recommend?
What other components do I require to keep steering wheel controls ect?
Can anyone supply and fit all the above on the forum ?

Any help much appreciated  :happy2:

09 plate if that makes a difference

I went for an RNS-315.

For around £260 I got the unit itself, microphone for install into the overhead interior light cluster, GPS antenna and a new canbus gateway (all ebay). The gateway is required to stop battery drain on earlier cars, you may be okay having a later car (mines an 06).

The unit itself, though having a slightly smaller screen than some others has nav, DAB if you want it (additional aerial, i didn't bother) and Bluetooth built in - this was the thing that sold it for me. Other units with Bluetooth are available but require an external module.

Fitting is a bit of a pain, but thats going to be the case with any radio. The dash has to partially come apart from the middle air vents down to the radio. You'll also need to code in the new unit using VCDS ((vag-com). Not a big problem if you can get hold of a copy of VCDS and the cable as there is plenty of info on the net about it and its quite straightforward. The tool is useful for determining your canbus gateway revision without having to take it out and look at it.

Also, just to add - I don't have buttons on the 'wheel so don't know about that side of things.

But the above confirms my lack of knowledge and know how to do with anything stereo/electrical  related things ( I climb trees for a living, so pretty thick   )

Can anyone recommend a company in Hampshire who can i go to for all that i need ? Or a forum person / sponsor ?

Thanks
