Rear alloy hub?

Hey.
Read a few places that it's possible to use the rear hub from EOS, scirocco, passat, tiguan and Audi TT on our MK5 Golfs.

Anyone changed the rear hubs?
I will change my front ones this weekend to new ones from a Passat.

Can't seem to find any threads on forums saying more that it is possible but nothing about if you need to change anything else, ride experiece etc etc....

I'm sure some of the control arms are alloy too on those cars? 

I've shaved 7kg from each corner at the front with the Passat stuff and coilovers, so I'd be interested in doing the rear conversions too  :smiley:

according to this thread and post 8 or 9 it should be possible to do.

Just to bad you can't see pictures anymore. I'm sure it'll fit but I'm also interested in knowing the fit with 18'' wheels - I'm using spacers atm, maybe I can skip those with the alloy rear hub?

Looking at these pics, it would seem the Passat and MK5 rear parts are the same, but you can see the Passat bearing housing is alloy.   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-PASSAT-B6-SALOON-2-0-TDI-REAR-SUSPENSION-HUB-REAR-RIGHT-O-S-/171913656844

The control arms look to be steel like the GTI's, so I'm not sure there would be as much to gain compared to the front parts?

I think the only gain is the weight saving you'll get

If you can save some weight I think It'll be worth it when the parts isn't more exspensive than it is? :) I think I will order these for each side and give it a go at some point when I got some time to fizzle with it  :pomppomp:

Exactly @Pudding . Tried fit my front alloy hubs and wishbones today. Didn't get to finish to job since I didn't had the correct bolts to the brake caliper carrier. The alloy hub is way thicker than the stock one so couldn't re-use the old ones..

Hopefully they have it as stock item at the dealers tomorrow


Will wait putting on my rear susspension untill I get the rear hubs home and cleaned. :)

Yeah the 21mm carrier bolts are a lot longer.  I hope you got the bigger shouldered nuts for the ball joint and the track rod end?

Hi, I fitted S3 alloy front hubs yesterday and had the same issue with the bolts.

What bolts are you going to get as from looking online the S3 seems to use guide pins which just have a thread at the end.

As already stated, you need the Passat/S3 21mm caliper carrier bolts x4,  and Passat/S3 18mm shouldered nut x 4.

I did replace all bolts and nuts while I was at it. Don't like putting old stuff back on when it's been off the car hehe.

@Pudding did you expirence any problems with the brake disc isn't centered in the caliper holder? Mine is grinding on the back side of the disc now.. Just had a VW mechanic doing the alignment to the front wheels as I will wait doing my rear susspension when I get the rear hubs. He couldn't really tell me why the disc isn't centered?  :confused:

I did this mod a while ago and shared my experience with @Pudding before he got his together.  What you describe sounds like a potential issue with the hub bearings as the disc and caliper carrier are your originals. Did you use genuine/oem bearings?

I fitted new genuine bearings to mine and everything aligned first time in regards to the disc, caliper and carrier.

@Pudding is correct on the new carrier to alloy hub bolts, the Passat/S3 bolts are longer as the alloy is thicker than that of the original cast steel hubs.  You also need the correct track rod end nuts and the ball joint nuts with the shoulders to stop the steel insert in the alloy hub pulling through.

I did change my wheel bearings with new SKF ones. However I think these are the issue? - But again never done this before and I'm not a mechanic hehe.
You think it's the wheel bearings that is making this issue? SKF normally makes pretty good parts.

I did screw all new nuts and bolts to this when I did the assembly of all the new parts :)
