Golf MK5 - Chrome Beetle/Jetta Heater Controls Retrofit Idea?
« on: February 26, 2017, 12:12:42 am »
Hello guys first post on the forum and would like to say hello for a start!

Anyway I'm posting about an idea that I've noticed, but not seen any posts anywhere on the internet about it. I'm wondering if anyone has attempted this retrofit or it's something that's not been attempted before due to lack of knowledge or just someone not attempting it.

The retrofit I'm on about in more detail is taking the newer chrome tipped heating unit from a 2012+ Beetle or Jetta and replacing the more duller MK5 Golf heating unit. From the pictures and connectors it looks like a straight plug and play with no alternative jobs to be done. The existing fascia doesn't need to be changed also by the looks of it. This would also compliment the chrome tipped switches alot of users seem to change on their vehicles. Another reason why I'm unsure why this retrofit hasn't been attempted

Here are some overall pictures for comparison:

If anyone has anymore information, or has attempted this retrofit, feel free to comment below!
Cheers.

I'd imagine it would fit, this will be my back up plan if my plan A of fitting mk6 Golf heater controls to my 2009 Jetta in the hope that being a late model it has the same motor for controlling air director dial as the mk6, or that 2010 Jettas with mk6 heater controls in a mk5 dash use the same front as a mk6 but with the rear of a mk5 set so I can still change airflow direction, failing that I'll see if I can separate the back part of my existing heater controls and mate them to the front of the mk6/2010 Jetta ones which seems possible because the face is just screwed onto the rear.

If none of that works I'll be sourcing the Beetle ones like in your pic.

Sorry for the bump, but did you ever purchase a set of controls and give this a try? I'm also keen, but can't seem to find any definitive yes/no answers. Couple of threads from 2011/2012, at which point the controls were far more expensive.

Here are a couple from Ebay. I've tried looking at the connections carefully but can't see any differences.

Yeah the connections in both heater controllers look identical, apart from the slight difference in pins on the newer model. You can see the difference in pins from the photos below.

*New*

*Old*

Unfortunately I've not purchased the heater controls due to needing finances in other locations (Flywheel, Clutch and Brakes :driver:) but if you want to take the plunge and buy a heater unit from the one's you've listed, I'll definitely be looking forward for an update in the future. If you do go ahead and buy a unit and it doesn't work, you'll still be able to sell the item on eBay and make back around what you originally paid for it :drinking:

Thanks also for the reply and remembering me to update this topic due to the recent Photobucket image fiasco, I appreciate it.
Cheers.

No sweat! I may purchase one soon, going to see if any pop up outside of China/US, avoid customs charges where possible. Seems to be the US Jetta & beetle only that has them.
