How to tell if mapped???
« on: September 19, 2017, 03:32:07 pm »
Now a quick question........I want to know if there is any way you can tell if a car has been mapped? I.e. Is there anything in the ecu that would obviously point to this??
I might be blond and female but am not stupid
I have a couple of my own cars mapped but I know this (1 was a custom map......god that was a 4 fig sum!)

What car is it specifically?

A good way to tell on a TDI is that the turbo will spool & kick in at lower revs (some can vary even at stock, but it's usually around 2000rpm). If mapped, some maps can be set for the turbo to kick in as early as 1500rpm. Also another way to tell is put your foot down and see how much black smoke comes out of the exhaust

Liam.

I believe you can find out using VCDS. One of the guys can guide you through as I still don't have the software and cable :(

I have been told that the car isn't spooling up to what the ecu is wanting and I know the car stores the fault and will put Eml on if it receives 3 issues of the same fault so is that a map or turbo failure??

The usual signs are "requested boost pressure" being a lot higher than standard, and there's a "Flash count" counter which shows 0 on a standard car.  1 or more indicates a map has been uploaded.

From your description it sounds more like an under-boost condition.  The usual suspect for that is a split diverter valve.  Most folk upgrade to the GFB DV+, or a revision D or G VW part if you don't fancy dabbling with aftermarket bits.

What is the exact error that's putting the money light on?

Unless you have a split boost pipe or a dead N75 valve, it pretty much just leaves you the diverter valve as the most likely cause.    Could be time to upgrade to Captain Go Fast and his bits.

I hate dead  n75 valves ......they are the bane of my life  :scared:
I am hoping black rubber.....easy fix but as the money light is on I suspect not :fighting:

Just got her back from the dealers and seems it was the N249 (£38.72 +
Plus the dreaded) cut off valve for turbo.....it was cracked so has been replaced.
Car now seems to pick up much quicker and more responsive unless it’s my imagination

Good news.   No you're not imagining it.  A split DV bleeds most of you boost off!

As has already been said, you need to log into the ECU and check a few things.  You'll need VCDS or equivalent.  Or just take it to a dyno and get a measurement taken.
