Near gti crash video

Near miss on motorway - looks like a Pirelli edition. Thankfully all ok. If driver is on here hope you're ok - looked scary!

very scary indeed!!

For those who are more knowledgeable in these things, The car in the video appears to lose control from the back end - is this why its advised that new tyres should always be fitted to the rear?

Thanks

Rich

Looks a really odd one, looks like the rear wheels lock up out of nowhere for some reason.

Hats off to the bus driver mind

Very odd that the rear wheels locked up and then the fronts also from the look of the video near the end. I would have thought that ABS prevented that.

Makes me wonder if there was some sort of fault and whether mine would do the same thing

Alternatively the driver maybe panicked when he saw the cars in front almost come to a standstill and hit the brakes hard including pulling the handbrake. All guesswork on my behalf and could be a million miles from what actually happened

Amazing no one got hurt given it was a stationery car in the fast lane

Could it have something to do with the abs/esc recall on the later mk5 ? I've got mine booked in with vw this Thursday as I had a letter from them about it . Looks to be a Pirelli edition ( the fastest golfs around i heard  :driver: ) so a late mk5 .....

Very weird how the car behaved like that. Am amazed it didn't hit the central reservation. Very nearly one less Pirelli edition on the road...

It was probably the sudden heavy braking shifting all the weight off the rear wheels that allowed them to lock up before the electronics could do anything.

I thought the whole point of all the electronic trickery was to prevent that sort of result under heavy braking etc

Press sensationalism at it's finest.  "Heart stopping".  Hardly.  Being shot at by some lunatic from a balcony in Vegas is heart stopping.   "Passengers heard screaming".  Seriously, in this day and age?  Bun fights to get to a window to film it on their bloody phones more like.

And it's hard to see exactly what happened from that sh1tty little gif clip anyway.  Is there a full clip of it somewhere showing events leading up to it?

Assuming there were no ESP/ABS faults, no ESP system will rescue you once you get it sideways.   ESP is there to help recover you from moderate paced 'moments', not full on jumping on the brakes at motorway speeds.   If he stood on the brakes at motorway speeds with a bit of steering lock to avoid a stopped car, it would do a 180 quite easily.....even in the dry.

I understood that the whole point of ABS was to allow you to jump on the brakes and steer around an object

I have actually recently been to the Porsche silverstone experience and we were doing exactly that in Macans, caymans and 911’s.

In the little gif we see, the rear brakes totally lock which is very odd

Depends how severe the weight transfer is but likely the ABS wasn't working if they locked up in a straight line.

You guys all realise there's a gif AND a full video on the same page there, right?
