Gearbox oil?
« on: October 11, 2017, 03:36:45 pm »
Hi, I had my gear oil changed at my local garage and since then I've noticed the gears ate notching and someone stiff to change.. I asked my local VW Dealers for a price on supplying me with new OEM oil and this is there reply.

"I have been passed on your email address in response to your enquiry about Gearbox oil. It appears your vehicle is a manual gearbox and they are sealed for life so don’t have a real need to have the oil changed at all. It isn’t recommended to open the sealed gearboxes.
Kind regards

2 questions, is this correct and if so then how did my local garage change it??

That is correct.

DSG are serviced but that's a different story.

It should not be opened for servicing and the last mechanic that opened it shouldn't have.

Part no. G 052 171 A2.

Takes 2.5 litres IIRC, so you'll need 3 bottles.  It's expensive stuff.....about £15 per bottle IIRC.

It's the best oil for the manual box.  Everything else just ruins the shift quality.

Your garage probably just stuck some generic Castrol gear from Halfords in it.

Darkside sell the right stuff - have just done mine and it shifts quicker than the Millers in there before. Also added their solid bushes and an s3 shifter, all worthwhile.

This is interesting because I had my DSG gearbox oil changed by VW main dealers st 65,000 miles and I am suspicious that they didn't change it charging £199 and they did the job very quickly within a few hours. I checked my battery housing bolt for them to get to the filter and didnt look like it was removed at all. Is there anyway to find out if they did change the oil at all!? I was also told that I wouldn't need another DSG service for another 60,000miles i.e. 2-3 years

The parts department at your dealership will happily sell it to you. As already mentioned buy genuine only, not some Febi equivalent. It's not the same stuff and will ruin the cold shifting of your gearbox. Buy 3 litres, sure its up to about £18 a litre now but if you only do it once in your ownership, its well worth it

As already mentioned, Darkside sell the correct stuff for less £s than that - https://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/genuine-transmission-oil-for-6-speed-manual-02m-02q-g-052-171-a2.html

Please don't use anything other than that otherwise you're throwing good money after bad.   It's a special thin oil to get these boxes to shift properly.

Just tried darkside and it's 17.50 a bottle plus £6 shipping plus 11.50 vat so total cos for 3 bottles is £70.50
Might as well goto a dealer near me. :/

Ah OK, I thought their prices included VAT!  Dealer it is then!   70 quid isn't a lot to get your shift quality back
