Miltek Highflow Sports Cat
« on: October 12, 2017, 08:31:41 am »
So,

I just bought and received a Miltek 3” sports cat and currently have a stage 1.

I am worried that I will get an EML if I install it now and not stage 2 it (cant afford the stage 2 for a while)
Got my MOT coming up VERY soon so obviously don’t want the car to fail.

Is it likely that my EML will come on?

Cheers!

Why not fit it after the MOT....

There's a chance the EML will come on at some point for a catalyst efficiency code, but the car is fine to drive like that until you get it mapped. Don't be tempted to fit a spacer to the second lambda in order to remove the EML - that lambda is used for a lot more than just catalyst performance and needs to stay as it is

Common problem with sport cats.  Even with the rear lambda coded out to disable the money light, you may struggle with the MOT.  My 200 cell sports cat even when new only just scraped through with 0.1%, which is the pass limit for EU4 emission regulated cars.  OEM cats usually measure ~ 0.01%.

I'm pretty sure MED9 post-cat is monitoring only.  ME7 post cat O2 could over-ride the primary O2, which is why R32s & S4s (2.7t) lost responsiveness in the part throttle when binning the cats.  I don't notice any change in behavior at all pulling the rear O2 in my ED30.

Is it actually safe enough on the car to run a Downpipe on stage 1 without it being mapped for?

I'm on APR stage 1 and the milltek website says I need a stage 2 tune to fit the downpipe. I'm guessing thats just because of the EML though right?

Quite possibly, but it depends at what stage APR code out the post cat lambda monitoring.

In terms of 'safe', yes it's fine to add a downpipe without a retune.  The wastegate control map will adapt and smooth out any torque spikes, which you will definitely get initially because of the huge reduction in back pressure.

An APR downpipe bumped the torque up 30lbft and power up by 20hp on my ED30 without touching the map.  Obviously you'll get a lot more if you take advantage of the downpipe and dial in more timing and boost.

Consider an intake if you want harder pull past 5500rpm, but don't expect much more than 15hp gain from that.
