Civic type R owner, looking to change

Hi there. I've had a CTR (the 01-06 shape EP3) for almost 3 years now and fancy a change. Naturally I thought of the new shape CTR (FN2) and the Japanese version (FD2) but I think I've had it with VTEC, fancy something with good grunt lower down the revs. My mate who just bought an Audi TT with the same 2.0T FSI engine says I will love it.

More comfort would be nice too. CTRs are fast but part of that is the loss of comfort, noise supression, toys etc.

I'll be testing one out on Tuesday, it's not the spec i'm after but should give me a good idea of what they're like to drive.

I'll probably test out the FN2 aswell, as the Honda garage is close to the VW garage, and I've been a Honda man for years. Secretly I hope I prefer the Golf. I'm sure you will convince me beforehand  :grin:

Welcome, you'll love the Golf mate. Drive the Ed30 if you can, theyre abit faster then your old CTR.

Remap it and you have a Animal!!  :drinking:

Famous last words "I don't want to modify it"

My EP3 was modded, I won't bore with you with the details but spent around £6k in the last 2 years. Was last mapped at 233bhp with a slipping clutch. VTEC lowered to 4.5k, really shifts.

I must be getting old @32, I quite fancy cruise control.

No mate, I'm no troll. Genuinely interested in the GTI thus far.

Does the ED30 come in all colours of the normal GTI? I only like the Silver, Candy White and Grey colours.

Currently browsing the audio section for my iPod questions. Must have iPod in the car.

Stock Ed30 or Pirelli if you want Stock power at around 227bhp.

and you best be very strict on what you read here.

Oh and DSG is worth a go, doesnt suffer with clutch slip as much as the manual  :wink:

My budget is around 15k, with less than 20,000 miles. I am based in NE Scotland and the cars that meet my criteria so far are at least 120 miles away. A grey and a white one, both with less than 10,000 miles, 2007 models.

I take it the suspension on the ED30 & Pirelli models is stiffer than the standard GTI?

200bhp would be enough if it means sacrificing mileage for performance. Just want something comfy, fast, few toys, reliable, and good looking.

Again, probably famous last words  :party:

Oh yes DSG sounds good, but rare and maybe not in budget.

Same suspention in both cars fella.

Ed30/pirelli is full colour coded, The standard GTi has Black Plastic rear bumper and Black plastic side skirts.

£15k will get you in a good spec motor :happy2:

Suggest you go test drive a dsg car at a vw dealer and see if you like

it . Great fun and worth paying for. But coming from a stick shifter CTR

you may wanna stick with a manual.

Does the DSG mean paddles or tiptronic stick shift? Or are both options? I think I'd struggle with a paddle shift, wouldn't know what gear I was in  :confused:

DSG  imo is awesome. You can drive it like your sat in an F1 racing car.

Gear changes are done in Milliseconds with no lag in power, just the great sound of the exhaust burping out the rear, and no faid in lost torque that you would get using a clutch.

Its a very diverse box, tells you on the dash computer what gear your in and is totally safe so you cant get a gear change wrong.

Go test it, its not your conventional Auto, but can be driven in so many ways depending on your driving style.

It does all the changes for you, even for when you pull to a stop , you dont have to downshift etc, or put it in manual to have fun shifting yourselve.

Honestly go test drive one, try both models to see what floats your boat.Its the only way to make your own decision.
Ive had 4 DSG  cars and wont go back to a manual. Im 35 and quite a fast driver on occasion and absolutley love it.


You can use the gearstick to shift or use paddles mounted on the steering wheel so your hands stay on the wheel.

ex type r owner here  :laugh: had 2 of em and worked for Honda  :laugh: if you like the type r then u will love the gti once played with a little and i would defo try test drive dsg and manual as i hated dsg  :laugh: i dont care how fast it changes its still an auto  :P
