upgrade from iPhone 6 to 7, or to 8??
« on: October 21, 2017, 11:43:10 am »
Had an iPhone 6 for around 2 years now and its starting to look and feel it's age!

can decide whether to upgrade to a 7 or an 8, after reading some reviews online it would seem there isn't a huge difference between them. and going from a 6 would be a decent jump in performance.

anyone upgraded from a 7 to an 8? was there much of a difference?

Has to be an iPhone before anyone mentions android  I am too invested in the apple ecosystem to even think about switching, I also have a CarPlay headhunt in the GTi so that would just cause problems!

cheers guys. :happy2:

I would go 7. Unless you can get an 8 for not much more, its just not worth the extra £££ in my opinion.

Depends, I'd avoid contracts tbh as you end up paying double for the phone. If you're buying outright then it's dealer preference, if you get the 8 you'll probably have it longer than the 7 before it feels it age.

I just got my phone replaced under warranty so I'll stick with my 6s for a few more years, the latest update has ruined it though from what it was.

I've not heard many people complain about the 7 so that would be my choice.

The 7 is a great phone.  8 isn't worth bothering with as there is nothing over the 7 worth bothering with.

As Willni said, buy the phone outright unlocked if you can (worth more s/hand), with a cheap 4G deal, or Pay as you go.  Contracts are a complete rip imo, especially on the iPhone X.  £70 a month over 2 years = £1680 to have the latest and greatest.  Bonkers!

I've just jumped from a 7 to an 8 simply because I but mine outright, I dropped my 7 and got a refurb one on insurance so could sell it for top money.

The 8 is great, maybe slightly quicker but not really that you'd ever notice. The wireless charging I've used once lol. The huge downside to the 8 I find is as the rear is made of glass it slides off of everything!!!

Unless things have changed in recent months, I thought wireless charging is so slooooooow compared to a good old fashioned piece of wire?

I went from a 5 to a 7... the reason I didn't go for an 8 is there is so little difference and I could get an immaculate Unlocked 256GB iPhone 7 off of eBay for £500. I always buy outright and then pay £5 per month for my BT mobile contract with more data/texts/calls than I need. I'll keep this for a year or 2, keeping an eye on what Apple release and in 2 years time this phone will still be worth £300, so it's not cost me a lot per month as a placeholder; while I wait for a decent phone to be released.

A lot of people think they get a "free" upgrade on a contract...

So, in short, go for a 7  :happy2:

I went from a 5S to a 7 - bought it outright for the same reasons mentioned earlier. It's unlocked, and the money that EE were wanting to upgrade me to an 'IPhone tariff' in terms of the monthly cost was just too much I felt. I upgraded my plan when it was due - got a cheaper tariff and more data than I had before, so no need to move to an 'IPhone plan' to have a newer phone!
In the future my circumstances will be different, and may not have the cash upfront to buy outright (am looking to buy a house), so this was one of the things I wanted to update before I might not be able to so easily in future.

I chose the 7 as it had a faster processor than the 6, and I think the camera was better. Haven't looked at the 8, but the prices sound eye-watering. I went for the smaller 7 (not the one that is a mini tablet in size!) and have been very happy with the better screen resolution, camera, etc.

I've had iphones since the 3gs after a short spell with a HTC. I've just sold my 7+ to my brother with the intention of buying an X but having just been in the apple store and tried the 8 and the 7 side by side the 8 is actually slower at everything I tried. I.e., app switching, loading new apps, typing etc. Shocked is an understatement. I took my brothers old 6 off him as a trade in and in the process of wiping and restoring the phone I was forced to upgrade to ios11 on it. It is now a complete pile of cr@p, it's woefully slow and reminds me of an old android with all of the stuttering and lag. My point being that I don't think the 8 was at fault rather the fact that it runs ios11 out of the box.

My 7 had been perfect for the last year, fast/smooth/reliable and i'm now regretting selling it. With all of the new tech in the X and the fact that it runs this ios11 junk, i'm now not buying it at all. I even have the day booked off this Friday to go pick it up at launch, definitely not going now.

If I was in your shoes, I'd try to get a 7/7+ and hope that it's still on ios10 in the box but DO NOT upgrade.

I'm currently pricing Samsung S8's on ebay etc as I'm absolutely disgusted over the lack of effort on Apples part with this new software and the rip off pricing getting completely out of hand.

Good luck with your choice.  :happy2:

Planned obsolescence

Touch wood, my 7 has been fine with ios11, up to and including 11.1.  No noticeable slow downs at all.  In fact, with 11.1 I've actually seen an improvement in performance  :happy2:  My GF's 6S has slowed down a little, but not enough to justify a newer handset.

Device and software makers have been at this game for decades.  Systematically releasing new OSs with tons of bloatware designed to slow down older devices, forcing you to upgrade.

Unfortunately, too many fanboys camp outside Apple stores every year to be the first to get the latest device....... so Apple will continue to bleed us all dry if the demand for it is there, which it is, in droves.

They don't make that easy either.   If you don't sign out of icloud before you wipe the phone, it doesn't let the new owner register it as a new phone.

And if you back up the phone to iTunes on a windows PC, and try and restore it with a Mac.....yeah, that causes big headaches too.

I'm feeling nostalgic......best phone ever.   I lament the days of simplicity.
