Brakes - Query

Hey guys,

I had Audi S3 brakes on my MK5 GTI (340mm TTS discs). The discs & pads were approx 4k miles old, and then my car was sadly written off by my insurer. I have since sold the brakes on as I put the majority of it back to standard, but have had complaints of juddering (as if warped) from them. I can whole heartedly say that they were most definitely not warped / nor had my car ever been on a track day etc.

Could there be a valid explanation as to why they were absolutely fine on my car and are behaving differently on another MK5 GTI?

Thanks @rich83 LOL - I'm trying to help the guy out, just because I think it's being caused by something else. I know I'd feel pretty annoyed if I'd spent money on something and it wasn't as expected.

Yeah as much as we could be a "sold as seen" community it's always nice to help someone else get as much enjoyment out of parts as you have when you pass them down.

Plus it's part of being in the elitist VAG club to be better than others right?

Is there a chance they were damaged in the write off? Selling/buying ‘consumable’ items secondhand is always a bit of a gamble.

I don't think so. The accident I had was purely cosmetic. No structural damage etc occurred. I even drove it from there to my house! Aside from my bumper hanging off, there was nothing untoward in the way it drove / brakes operated.  So just genuinely confused.

Tbh isnt most likely cause poor fitting? If you dont really tidy up that hub with a wire brush and get a good fit then you will have some misalignment which results in judder? Happy to be told they were fitted expertly but I think I read its the most common cause of judder, not warping which is pretty rare these days.

This is what I'm leaning towards. I just cant see the discs and pads being at fault. I remember I had a proper wire brush at my hub when I fitted them, so maybe it's worth exploring.

Faz sold the setup to me

They were fitted by me and my mechanic who is a vw specialist.

We definitely used wire brush on the hub.

Back at the garage today to take it apart now to check everything over.

If its juddering could it be warped discs?

Warped discs are very very rare. More likely to be a build up of pad material. I have no idea how much you paid for the brakes but a pair of discs wont brake (see what I did there?) the bank, so I would just get some new discs and pads.

Get a cheap dial gauge from Amazon to check the disc run out.

Agreed, warping discs from normal road driving is pretty uncommon now, but what tends to cause it if the hub faces are 100% flat and clean, is people holding the car on the footbrake after driving it hard.   Should always use the handbrake.  That way, if localized cooling does cause a slight warp, you won't feel it on the back brakes.

Or is this only with the TTRS brakes that has the 370mm discs?

TTRS 370.... I think they brought out a newer version which sorted the problem out.

I think this is the case, hence lots of new old stock on the bay going for less than seems the norm.

370s aside, it seems an issue with the 345/340 setup. Inexplicable wobble/judder.

I've gone through a set of Pagid and a set of Mintex 340mm discs (with the later 60mm MQB caliper) in no time at all. I figured it was driver error the first time round, but then the Mintex did the same.

I'm leaning towards a slow piston, in my case. I should really have rebuilt the Clubsport calipers when I bought them, but they looked in great shape, so I didn't. My error.

I'll probably go for the Clubsport S discs and pads, and if there's still an issue then I give up.
