Mk V Golf GTi Advice

Hi, I'm looking ay buying a Mk5 GTi, to replace my C30 D3, my only experience of the VAG group is a disasterous purchase of a Fabia VRS TSi, that used copeous amounts of oil.

I just want to know if there's anything specific I should look for, do the TFSI engine in the GTi suffer from oil comsumption issues, is the manual better than the DSG. Are there known issues with the DSG etc.

I loved the DSG in the fabia but was accutely aware if anything went wrong it would be very expensive to sort.

Yeah they use tons of oil.   DSG has a known issue with the captive thrust overlord spigot housing.  They rust to hell.  They're not quick and they cost a fortune in parts.  Terrible cars.  Your C30 D3, what ever the hell that is, is a far better car.

Cheers for that, I did try the search function but could not find a buyers guide, I wasn't meaning to offend anyone, I've never had a VW, as stated only experience I've had is with a Skoda and that didn't go well.

These questions do get a lot on here - maybe there should be a sticky of genuine common problems? Or things you will most likely encounter in Gti ownership?

E.g
PCV valve replacing
Split DV
Rusty Arches/sills/boot
Can chain/tensioner/adjuster
Jerking/juddering when putting foot down = replacing coil packs/sparks/possibly injectors
Cam follower replacement
White worm on monza alloys
Mechatronics for DSG cars
Oil pick up pipe/strainer

Anything else people can think of?

Anyway, to answer your question. Some do use oil and some don't. By putting good oil in and servicing regularly then you'll likely prevent this. I've switched to Millers and have not had to top up once.

The DSG are known to fail. If you by a cheap one in sh*t condition, it will have a 50% of failing so if you're not willing to take the risk then buy manual.

They're amazing cars but they cost money to upkeep. If you're not willing to spend the time and money doing so I honestly don't think you should buy one. Maintenance is honestly a huge cost each year and that's excluding performance mapping etc.

Yeah that covers the main ones, maybe add Termostat and door mechanism failure as well - most of these issues are common across the VAG group of cars. The oil usage "issue" can affect the TFSI engine but as long as its within VW limits it should be fine, think its !L per 1000 miles if I remember correctly. However some cars use very little to no oil. My own car is still sitting on full (checked yesterday) that's after 8000 miles since the last service in Jan.

If you are looking to go into the work of the GTI just make sure you buy a looked after example with FSH etc, don't forget these are performance cars so are more prone to being thrashed and driven hard, that's generally when problems arise but as long as they are maintained its fine.

Lol, not so much brand bias, but rather laziness.  1000s of pages of info at peoples finger tips, but some folk would rather everyone else do the research and decision making for them.  What ever happened to people just going to a dealer and test driving things to come to their own conclusions?  It seems odd to me that anyone would buy a car solely on the strength of internet opinions!

But then again, brand bashing as a 1st post has troll written all over it.
