Driveshaft/ DSG problem.

Hi guys, the other day i heard a ticking from the passenger side front and was a rotating noise so took it to the garage and he said the driveshaft bolts had come undone so he greased everything up and bolted it all back together but the 2nd trip out after this I noticed it had come back and it was a bit jumpy at junctions.

After about 4 miles I noticed i was stuck in one gear so went straight home instead of popping in the shop but when I pulled up to park, i put it in reverse and it worked, but when I tried moving forward id got nothing but neutral, tried all gears and noticed the prnds display flashing, so I just rolled down the hill and parked it.

I tried it later and the display had stopped flashing and id got gears again.

Now ive looked at a few posts on here but im confused wether there’s anything wrong with the driveshafts or is it just the mechatronic unit?

Theres a link on one of the old threads about a rebuild company charging £250 plus vat, are these a good alternative?

He shouldn't grease up the bolts on the drive shaft but lock tite them so they don't rattle loose. Had a gti 6 weeks back where the RHS came lose with one bolt missing and one bracket bent with no way of straightening it.

PRNDS flashing could be a sign of throttle pedal or selector being an issue as I went to an ED30 with both issues and two separate occasions.

Thanks for the reply bud, I didn’t mean he greased the bolts but the other stuff he took off.

Im hoping its a simple fix but struggling to find a garage with a trailer lol.

Take the gear gaitor off and there's a yellow ball type of thing inside the right side of the gear selector. Get a driver and try gently unclick it.

basically that maybe the issue you're having with flashing PRNDS. Is it shifting or stuck in P

If i went to it now id have gears, like turning it off resets it, it moves through the selector fine, i cant get underneath it as I don’t really want to drive it other than to a garage but ill tell them what youve said.

Im taking it to a vw specialist so they probably dealt with it before.

I think mech unit im afraid. Flashing PRNDS is classic sympton of failing mech unit. That coupled with not having gears sometimes - id say mech unit.

To replace the mech unit itself is expensive - id be tempted to buy a second hand DSG box as a whole. You can get them sub £500
