Ticking noise.
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:17:58 am »

When sat at traffic lights yestarday i could hear a ticking noise from the engine sounded like tappets but not sure.
Was just wondering if this is normal.

If not anyone any idea what it could be? :scared:

The problem with the designated driver program, it's not a desirable job. But if you ever get sucked into doing it, have fun with it. At the end of the night, drop them off at the wrong house.

How is your oil level?

The GTI engine is pretty tappety sounding to be honest.

The noise you heard could also be the climate system vents moving around, they click and 'tap' all the time!

Oil level fine and with all fans switched off started the engine and was fine until warmed up then started tapping again, It sounds like a diesel.

Easiest place to find is on your log book under 'Engine Number'
As for price, not 100% sure.  I know the parts required are less that £100 and the fitting I would guess at about 3-4 hours.  Mine has been like this for over 40k now, keep meaning to get it done though.  Should add that the noise hasn't got any worse in that time, but that doesnt mean its ok to leave.  Will pull my finger out soon and get it done   :happy2:

Can they not just tighten the tensioner? or has it gone like that because the chain has gone slack??

Belt is on one side, the cam chain is on the other.  The chain is just between the two cams on the HPFP side of the engine. :happy2:

Thought it was, and my noise is coming from the chain side, hopefully they can sort it when it goes in for its next service.
