That many owners isn't uncommon with the R32s. It's nothing shady. People underestimated it's fuel costs, and over estimated it's performance and handling. It wasn't the car people hoped it would be. Very heavy, strange torque curve, very thirsty and not very quick. That's why they changed hands frequently.
The smart R32 purchase currently would be a cherished 3dr MK4 with <3 owners and < 50K miles.
