Coilovers choice - edition 30
« on: November 21, 2017, 09:14:01 am »
Hi all, been searching the net and just can't make my mind up on what coilovers to get for my edition 30 (manual). I've been interested in AP and seen some apex rdx too, just wondering if someone has either of these on and can give there opinion or can steer me in another direction of what to get, I'm looking to go low but not ridiculous!
Budget is 700ish. Thanks

Relentless seem popular though I don’t have personal experience

Relentless are rebadged BC Racing I believe, and you have to order them via the TFSI tuning fecesbook group.  Enter the playground with caution, order them, then get out again   Samuel Bryant is the contact.

Vogtland seem to get good reviews as well.

If you just want mild lowering and stiffened up a bit, consider also fixed strut kits, like Bilstein B12 Pro or VW Racing line.   Everyone seems to just go for coilovers by default without really knowing what they want to achieve.

How low do you want to go? That's your main concern before choosing what kit to go for. Some are only good when you lower the ride at least 30 mm, just like what H&R -30 mm and Eibach Sportlines springs lower. Others are made for minor lowering, so they're not good for people who want a very low ride (Öhlins or Bilstein B16 vs KW or H&R).

I found the group on Facebook and sent them a message just asking on info and price etc. And I'm looking for dropping and not ruining the ride a whole lot, maybe 50-60mm if I can get away with it not causing me problems as it's my daily driver, thanks for replying

Mine has H&R -30 mm springs at the moment. The front tyre is at the wheel arch level. If you're considering those 50-60 mm like the OEM drop (20 mm) + the springs drop (30 mm), that's about how low mine is. I wouldn't lower more or you'll have troubles with most speed bumps.

One good thing about the Relentless kit is that it comes with adjustable top mountings so you can wind on some negative camber for better handling. If you intend dropping your car so low, especially with softish daily driver damping settings, you are likely to get some arch rubbing and tucking in the wheels with negative camber may help you avoid this.

Think I'm gonna go towards the relentless coilovers because of the reviews and it's around what I was willing to pay anyway, thanks for all your inputs!

The reviews are good like the reviews about the BC Racing coilovers. Let us know what you think about them later.

I am running ST coil overs which are the same a KW, cheaper  because they are not not stainless, they are the fixed damping variant 1.
They don't go mega low I am running about 35-40 mm drop, ride is firmer than standard but by no means crashy

-60mm won't leave you with a lot of damper travel.  I won't go into boring motion ratios, but suffice to say, that is low!!  You may find yourself riding on the bumpstops more often than you'd like.  I was hitting them regularly with the alleged -25mm VWR kit.
