Do the tyres on your car say something about you or its history?
« on: November 29, 2017, 03:52:57 pm »
Was just thinking on the way home about the crappy tyres on my gti. I bought it with them already on , nothing to do with me! 2 hi fly on the front, 1 evergreen and unknown on the back.
Literally they won't be on much sooner!
Just think this sums up the previous owner! Did the bare minimum of a service and MOT stuff but no tlc or anything else. Resulting in cheap crap tyres on the car. Every car I have ever sold have had quality tires on, had loads of love and attention, and well looked after. People who get my cars are lucky in my opinion.
So, what tyres are on yours? Did you change them ? Have you stuck with the same ones etc?
Hope this has not been asked before!
Cheers Paul

I always think if you have good tyres on a car when buying it then the previous owner must of looked after it

If they've skimped on tyres then they'll have skimped on everything else in my opinion. One of the things I liked about mine when I went to view it was a matching set of nearly new Michelin pilot sport 3's which showed the previous owner wasn't afraid to spend money on it.

Never buy a car that has been skimped on.

Mine had 4 new tyres and brakes all round on it when I bought it.  F1 Assymetric 2s and VAG discs/pads.  Definitely a sign of previous owner loving because you don't spend that kind of money just to shift a car on.

Thrifty people will thrift.  Just don't go out for a pint with them!

Buyers of my old cars are even luckier    I replace bonnet and tailgate struts just because the existing ones look grubby, but work fine

I've walked away from dozens of 'mint' cars that had ditchfinders. Exactly for the reasons noted above.

Mine had 4 Kumho Ecsta on it when I went to view it. I deemed them a decent mid range tyre, so gave the rest of the car a good look and drive, and two and a half years on I'm happy with my judgement.

It now has Michelin PS4 on the front, and Super Sports on the back. Will be PS4 all round once the rears finally wear!

Fully agree - Tyres are the one 'branded part' that are easy to distinguish and say a lot about how the car has been cared for. Not always as easy to spot budget service or replacement parts like an ECP cheapie CV joint, or some random waterpump and cambelt kit for example.

Anyone else get annoyed when people say "tyres are tyres" or "all tyres are the same"  :fighting: Or worse... Those that buy Uniroyal Rainsport 3's because they have reasonable traction and quite simply, they are cheap..... but yet they think they are the best tyre ever  :rolleye:

Mine has 4 matching Michelin PS4 and I have another 4 in stock in my shed ready for when these wear out :booty: :signLOL:

Khumo Ecstas aren't bad actually.   Rainsports.......meh.  Way too soft for hard summer driving.  Squeal central with lashings of understeer.

The only thing I don't like about premium tyres is how quickly they 'go off' and start to tramline past half worn.  Bridgestone got around that with a compound that got softer the more it wore down.  The RE050A is pretty much the only tyre I've tried that feels consistent from day 1 to completely spent.  Michelin have only just started using the same dual compound method, with the PS4 'S'.

Haha as much as I like stock piling, I wouldn't do that with tyres unless they get used within a year of manufacture.   I bought a set of winters a few years ago, which are now like concrete from not being used.

People who say "tyres are tyres" drive slowly because usually they are equally tight with fuel, and bang on about mpg all the time.   Ditchfinders are OK in slow land.....until you hit a patch of ice.   But they try and convince themselves (and others) that £40 Ling Longs are just as good as ~£120 PS4s.

I had them insanely cheap - £120 for one pair and £100 for the other pair - Couldn't say no  :signLOL:

Tyres will be inside in the warm over winter and the first pair will likely be fitted in the spring. I'm sure they will be ok

Just check their DOT code before they go on, Dan. You shouldn't have problems unless they're stashed away for years!
