Wheel hop solutions ?

Just started experiencing wheel hop upon accelerating hard from set off. On my GTI Mk5 DSG. Had all 4 wheels alligned. Has helped reduce it a little but it's still there. Plenty of thread left on my tyres.

Still new to engine upgrades. What are some midrange priced things I could get to stop/reduce it ? I.e. Better tyres or engine mounts ??

First solution is to upgrade the lower engine mount (dogbone) and both bushes, a stiffer suspension, gearbox and motor mount help also.

I got plenty of hop with an uprated dogbone mount running standard suspension.  It wasn't until I changed all 3 mounts and fitted stiffer suspension did it go completely.  You need a decent amount of damper rebound to control the wheel oscillations.

I hate wheel hop.  It sounds like a couple of Orangutans are having a fight with hammers under the bonnet.

Thanks guys.. ATM I'm on 20mm eibach springs. Everything else is stock. Think I'm gonna get it all one at a time. Saving the pennies.  :grin:  .  Also does the weather have an effect on wheel hop ??

So dogbone first, then Gearbox and engine mounts. Which bushes would
I need replacing ??

What are the costs for them all roughly ??? Thanks  :happy2:

You'll want the Whiteline or SuperPro anti-lift bushes.  Fairly pricey as a complete console assembly, but the press in bushes are a lot cheaper.  Can't remember how much they are.  £200 ish for the consoles I think, about £80 for the press ins.

Engine mounts are <£100 for a set of Powerflex inserts, right up to £400ish for a full set of Revo or Vibtratechnics mounts.

Wheel-hop appears when there's not enough grip on the front, so weather plays a big part.

Fitting coilovers was the biggest reducer in wheel hop for me. Bilstein B14s almost eradicated it at stage 1, Dogbone mount (powerflex), Superpro ALK and some H+R anti-rollbars removed it entirely. That being said I'm now at 2+ so can spin the wheels in this cold greasy weather without much effort. You get diminishing returns from each extra mod but price wise ALK and dogbone mount are prolly cheapest, then ARBs, then a good set of coilovers

When mine was K03...I installed a poly pendulum insert. It was the thing advertised back then to eliminate wheel hop. It did nothing.
I then installed the W.A.L.K. and it helped some.
Wasn't until I replaced all three mounts, at the same time I went K04, that all wheel hop disappeared. Replacing the lower sub-frame mounts, for the dog-bone(pendulum), is better than the poly insert. Yeah same.  It's so smooth to drive now.  Where it hopped and juddered about like crazy before, now the TC light flickers briefly and I'm barely aware the wheel is spinning.  A bit like a powerful BMW with an open rear diff.  A momentary loss of acceleration but no drama.

One thing I do get now is torque steer.  Not excessive amounts, but noticeable at Stage 2+ levels of tune.  I'm running standard geometry, so -0.6 camber and +0.05 toe out and I don't want to change it because it gives the best handling/tyre life compromise.   So.....I have acquired all the parts to retrofit equal length driveshafts from the A3 TDI/Touran/Passat.  This will kill the torque steer and even out the tyre wear as well because the tyre with the shortest shaft always spins first, so wears down more than it's opposite.   There is also a software option on some models to use the power steering to counter torque steer, but it's not available on my 07 ED30.  Older GTIs might have it though.  Apparently it works, but at the expense of steering feel.

Anyway, I digress...... with the dampers, I noticed softening the rebound just 3 clicks was enough to cause hopping.  As you say, suspension was also the biggest factor in killing the hop for me  :happy2:
