Mk5 gti change To r32??

Hi I’ve a mk5 gti and do love it but thinking about changing to something else? Been looking at r32’s although not a massive change, or jump in power but love the sound and fancy the change to 4wd, has anyone else made the change either way?

i made the jump from a modified gttdi running 220bhp to a r32 and never looked back..

There's a recent thread somewhere - worth looking it up because certain years are a fair bit more/less tax wise.

Depends what you're looking for really. If it's pure performance then I'd stick with the GTI and throw a grand or so at it. Once rolling even a (well mapped and healthy) Stage 1 GTI should show an R32 its arse. And the beauty is that 350bhp is there to be had if you can stomach the outlay and ensuing lack of traction!

There is something a bit nice about an R32 though. Obviously the noise. And get one with buckets if you can - it'll stand you well when it comes to move on.

My idea of an R32 is a mega clean mk4 with a twin turbo kit, the right suspension and the right brakes, running mild boost and making 400bhp or so. Until then my GTI will continue to be loved!

A friend of mine had his stage 2 mk5 GTI written off a few months ago by a drunk driver. He replaced it with a mk5 R32. He doesn't like it as much and keeps talking about selling it and getting another tuned mk5 GTI or Pirelli edition.
He says it's just not as much fun to drive as the GTI.  But he does like the sound.

The R32 would have to be purchased for it's engine sound alone because it offers nothing else over a GTI, apart from off the line traction.

And if it's 4WD you want, an S3 would be a wiser purchase.  Cheaper road tax and more power.  No brainer really.

Or something more interesting would be to convert a GTI/ED30 to 4WD as S3s are not very thrilling to look at, and no one will let you out of junctions with a  4 ring badge on the grille.

MK5 GTI a revolutionary design in the direct fuel injection system.
Though the R32 might sound better and the thought of “better” comes to mind but it doesn’t mean that it will give me then satisfaction that a GTI gave me when I first drove mine. It won awards two years on the trot and GTI all the way for me.

A genuine R32 is great but people mainly buy it for the noise of the engine, as it doesn't offer much up front versus the GTI especially the Edition 30 and Pirelli models as it's very similar performance spec maybe .2 of a second in 0-60 etc. If you're going to invest money in it i.e turbo or supercharge it then you'll have something very special.

As AJP mention get an early one, the tax is £240 on them versus £540 on later.

I'd love one but currently it's a mk4 R32

Superchargers are sh*te.  Hail yourself a cab and head straight to Turbo street 

HGP 400PS @ 0.8 bar Single turbo conversion for simplicity.   HGP are the best there is for this stuff, hence the price.  Not cheap at all.......but daaaaaammn it looks and goes good!

Edit €16,000 for 405bhp, think I'd rather take that money and buy an E60 M5  instead of turboing

If I ever bought an r32 would have to be a mk4 just love the look of it, stands out.

I recently picked up a late 2008 mk5 r32 DSG having owned a 2005 mk5 gti and a 2007 mk5 ed30.

It could be that i'm still in the honeymoon period but I live the r32 so far. Yes the tax is ludicrous at £520 a year, especially as its a weekend car for me, and yes it isn't the fastest car in the world but it is so sure footed.

I much preferred my gti compared to my ed30 - both where revo stage 1 but the ed30 just felt far too skittish when trying to get any power down, I never really enjoyed driving it to be honest.  The gti with the remap was perfect, I wish I hadn't sold it!

I've also recently put a lucifer resonated cat back on the r32 and the sound is fantastic.
