Oil talk
« on: January 01, 2018, 05:23:09 pm »
I topped up my oil today it was off the dipstick I put around 1.3-1.5ltrs in and it seems slightly above the max level!

Does anyone know how much oil the car has when the dipstick is on empty?

The MK5 GTI takes 4.6 litres of oil from empty, if its well above the MAX mark I highly recommend draining the oil slightly to get it back to safe levels otherwise you may risk damaging the engine.

The entire hatched section on the dipstick represents 1 litre.
i.e. If the dipstick shows your oil level to be at the bottom of the hatched section, then adding 1 litre will take it to the top (max.) of the hatched section.

If its only overfilled slightly it will be absolutely fine. 1L from min to max is the norm

Looks like it's around 3 litres left in the sump then, when 'off the dipstick', if adding 1.5l took it above the max.

Be careful doing that.  At least a litre will be in circulation around the engine when it's running, filling the filter canister, the VVT adjuster, the tappets, the turbo, etc etc which leaves even less in the sump for harder cornering.   Easy to run a big end dry.

Check your oil more frequently.

No way, I'm calling bullsh*t

I've read that handbook twice, once when I bought the car and again 6 months ago when I was on the sh*tter and had nothing else to read and saw no mention of it  :signLOL:

I haven't read my handbook either, so it may or may not be in there, but on every German car I've owned since 1990, it's always been 1 litre difference between min and max     Common knowledge I thought.  I guess not!
