Engine managment light after MOT
« on: February 08, 2010, 12:18:52 pm »
Took my car to in n out mot center in Milton Keynes this morning. Mot went fine, got into my car got a miledown the road and the EPC engine management light came on. Took it back and he said it was probably just a unlucky that it came on at the same time. I told him no chance and asked him to stick it on the diagnostic comp, too which I get a reply "we don't have one you will have to go to our northampton branch". so I said ok as I need to get it sorted. Got here after waiting a hour they put it onto the comp and the result... Over revving? Claims it's from when they did the emissons test. Light switched off and everything sorted.... Wishfull thinking! Get a mile down the road and it's back on! So I'm back hear waiting!! I paid the extra when I had to mot done to have oil and fluids topped up as well as injector cleaner put into the tank. Could this have caused a problem with a sensor? Anyone else had this sort of problem?

You could just be unlucky mate.

My PEC light is always on! I keep getting it turned off by either VAG-COM, indy garage or main dealer. It statys off for a few weeks, then comes back on again.  Last month it was in for a service with the VW main dealer and it went in with the light on and came out with if off. There was nothing said by the garage about it so I assume it's not serious. Anyway it came back on again yesterday.

I'm just going to keep clearing it until it won't go away any more since it's a sensor problem and the car drives fine. Probably a dodgy sensor.

I though it was only possible to over rev by mechanical means on a downshift thereby defeating the limiter?

when revving statically the soft/hard limiters should always protect the engine.
there would have been a rev number associated with the 'rev limit exceeded' any idea what it was?
Did you get the exact code too (as it can be looked up)

It certainly could be a sensor problem but Id be checking things thoroughly before assuming anything.
what are the subsequent codes when the light has come back on again?

EPC light can come on for a whole host of reasons, which is why you need the codes each time to fully diagnose the fault.

Northampton In n' Out could find anything about the error code which is P0601 (upper rev limit?).  So told me to go to VW and see what they said, to which i did and they wouldnt tell me anything unless they put it on the Diagnostic... £80. Then went back to In 'n' Out mk and told them what they said and he said he would ring the company who make the injector cleaner to see if they had heard of anything like this happening before. He then phones Wayside VW and apparently 2000 cars where recalled or something for displaying this error code.  In 'n' Out have taken my car to VW as a "good will jesture" and it will be staying there over night or untill they sort it :( so im now Car-less

ok well P0601 isnt a rev limit code, its an ECU error code, which I guess is better and goes with the fact it has re-appeared.  :happy2:

Wayside Vw have contacted me to say when they put my Reg into there system it came up saying it was Recalled because of a ECU fault. So its now getting a new ECU fitted? Hopefully this will solve it!

I have seen this before, most recently on an Octavia vRS.  It can sometimes be corrected with an ECU flash but if not then the easier route for them is a new ECU.

As for ignoring the CEL till the it stops being cleared - Well that's just burying your head in the sand.  You need to find out what it is and have it sorted, VW didn't put the light there to make your dashboard look less boring.

Well, it's been in to the main dealer TWICE and both times they have just cleared the light and not reported anything wrong. Considering the car is way out of warranty, you'd expect them to jump at the chance of some chargeable work!

I'm now thinking it should have had a recall and the VW dealer don't want to do this as it will cost them  :stupid:

Just phoned another VW dealer. My car has already had the ECU update for the recall. Booo, apparently there's nothing wrong with my car, just the damn light keeps comeing back on. It drives fine, so I'm going back to plan A - ignore it!

I can't remember off the top of my head, but it was a sensor out of range fault. I've already asked VW twice to look at it and both times they've said there's not a problem and reset the light. It stays off for a month or so then reappears. There's nothing wrong with the way the engine goes or feels, so I'm not going to worry about it. I'll check the code again when I install premium bluetooth with VCDS and see what it says

If you don't have VCDS then why not ask one of the members here to help.
