Mk5 Gti DSG shift boot replacement

Hi everyone

Has anyone replaced the shift boot on a mk5 gti DSG? If so is their a how to guide ?

I have a new boot to replace my current one but looking for some help as to how the boot comes away from the actual shift knob

I did have a quick look when I had the shifter off a while back and it looked like the boot is attached permanently and only way off is to either cut or break the plastic thing holding it on.
Will have a closer look as I’m planning to change mine too.

I had a look at this back in the day    I didn’t have much luck here is a photo of what your looking at:



The material is pinched between the black and chrome, I had one made out of the ‘tartan’ seat material but this proved to thick for the gap and was glued to the black bit instead it didn’t work well so I gave up.

Haha here’s my post from years ago.

Had another attempted today at removing the gaiter, with some 'success'. I used a hair dryer to heat up around the top of the gaiter in case glue was holding it on. I ended up going for it and just pulling the gaiter down to release it from the top part. It had a fair amount of visible glue around the top of the gaiter.

I then set about trying to establish how to have to release the rectangular piece of plastic originally beneath the gaiter. It soon became apparent that it is not possible to remove this piece. Is you look on the photo below, I have circled what looks like retaining pegs to keep it on its position and would initially appear that one press in the would release it. But they don't, and if somehow they did it still wouldn't clear the bottom parts I marked with the arrows. So I assume it was put together bottom to top 

The method I'm gonna try is to push the new gaiter between the plastic rectangle and metal collar and apply plenty of glue like found on the gaiter!



Sure this will be of some assistants for future reference

It just didn’t work but I think that was mainly because my custom made one was to thick, so not only did it have to much play when changing through the positions it also would stick / tuck to the knob. So I got a mk6 instead.

I’ve actually got a mk6 on mine too that I’m looking to change the gaiter on, hopefully it’s easier on that
