Electrical issues/limp mode...VCDS log inc
« on: June 08, 2015, 11:35:51 am »
so...I'm looking for some help/advice, and really need it on this one! I feel like I'm having every bloody issue I could!

Right...long story short, I realised that my radiator fans weren't coming on, a little investigation, and saw that the 50amp midi fuse had blown on the fusebox feed. Changed the fuse and then the big radiator fan worked...but constantly and with no control. So, removed the fuse, went to take the car out and boom....EPC light, quickly followed by CEL.

So, I've scanned with VCDS and I'm confused. I know a little, but not enough to really get to the bottom of it. I understand that majority of the fault codes are because there is an electrical issue, not that there is "anything wrong" with them, if that makes sense.

I've put a new battery on, that has made no difference, was hoping that was the issue. I've also checked with a multimeter what the voltage the battery is charging at...16.6v...so, I'm thinking is it just the alternator/voltage regulator, or is it possible that its charging at the voltage because there is an issue somewhere else. I'll add the logs I've got now, and any help will be really appreciated! I've spent a stupid amount over the last 6+ months, and really cant be spending a load more if possible! Thanks in advance!

There seems to be a lot of 'noise' on those logs. Personally i would clear all the logs, drive for a few minutes, or get the CEL to come on by it's self, then pull the logs.

Also to me 16 volts seems a bit high, might just be me, but I've not seen mine report above 14.4.....

I've cleared the logs..and that's what comes back.  I know a couple of them were already there, Nothing important like radio stuff. There was nothing under 01 - engine before though. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't charge over 14v or just over...hence why I'm blagged with all the stuff thats going on.

wholely
Well none of the logs show over 14.4 volts, so i think ur 'safe'

starting at the top P3087 on rosh-tech tech says
Possible Causes
Main Battery Cables
Weak Battery

Possible Solutions
Repair or replace Main Battery Cables
Load Test Battery, Replace if needed

Special Notes
Other control modules may have low voltage type fault codes.

Check with a multi meter the battery voltage, when off and then with the car running, just to rule out the 16 volts you saw.
Also this one looks like fun... check the special section about terminal 30....

005634 - Power Supply Terminal 30
               P1602 - 002 - Voltage too Low - Intermittent
Possible Causes
Cables on the Battery were removed
Battery weak (voltage)
Generator Malfunction

Possible Solutions
Check Battery Cables
Check/Replace Battery
Check/Replace Generator

Special Notes
If multiple Control Module have Power Supply Faults stored, it's most likely to be one common Problem like the ones shown above. Otherwise when only one or two Control Modules have such Codes stored you better start searching at the individual Power Supply of these Modules.
Terminal 30 means unswitched battery power that is supplied even when the ignition is off. This is not referring to any physical terminal numbered 30.

That was my reaction lol

I've had a multimeter on the battery (new) and  had the engine running with a voltage of 16.6 charging. In fairness, I did read that last part before, but had so many different things to try and get my head around blagged me.

Guess the most logical to look at is new alternator, as I've changed the battery and the cabling to them looks ok?

Also, if it is over charging which I'm as sure as I can be work, how long will it take to goose the new battery?

Just to say, genuinely appreciate the help  :happy2:

The safest thing to happen is it 'gooses'.
When over charging a lead acid battery it gets hot, produces hydrogen, hydrogen and oxygen in a enclosed area..... well do you remember the Hindenburg ?? no, nor do I but u see where i'm going with this..... BANG.

No solution , but this forum link seems to show point to a faulty voltage regulator on the alternator.

Yup, pretty much my concern...

Well plan is tomorrow she's going to a local vw indie, fingers crossed a new alternator will prove the solution...I hope.

Will do! It's frustrating isn't it, trying to figure out what's going on and just getting unfinished threads lol

Just wondering, anyone got ball park figures for an alternator install at an indie?

Right, been a while since I've posted anything in here....and it's still not sorted!

I got advised that the radiator fans were the culprit for the "possible" battery drain. I've now replaced the whole units, and they work...just nothing else!

Still in the same situation, limp mode, clear codes and they come straight back.

Pretty sure that it's charging as it should be, just keep getting the same issues. As far as I can see, the relays and fuses are all working correctly.

Does anyone have any ideas where I'm going wrong, possible leads. I think as far as I can tell I've checked all the relays, fuses ect.

One thing I didn't understand, VCDS is telling me I've open circuits ect, but there is voltage to them? This is confusing me.

Plus If there is any possible places to be looking, at what could be causing these errors. I've looked everywhere and it's all a bit confusing. I guess it's as its an electrical issue. Easy when a component dies!

I'm going to have to book back into the garage, to have a proper look at it, was messed about a bit, hence me trying to sort stuff myself.
Thanks!
