New Thermostat for the ED30..

Morning Guys,

The Ed30 (DSG) will need the main thermostat replacing soon - takes a long time to get up to decent temp, needle not sitting at 90c and then needle going up/down when coasting / stopping etc.

My trusted indy will be doing this - i believe its a pig of a job to do. Hopefully, i will be claiming under my AA breakdown cover for the job.

Whilst the garage are replacing the thermostat and the labour is being paid for, is there anything else that could be worth replacing at the same time (i would only have to pay for the part)?

Alternator/aux belt since it and the alternator need to be removed to get to it, otherwise no, not really unless they go overkill and remove the inlet and/or front end of the car to gain access (seen it done!  :signLOL:)

Do the inline thermostat(s) while you're at it

Timing belt and water pump due soon?

Coolant needs to be done anyway whilst doing thermostat so make sure it's the latest one G14 or something now.

As above, do the inline stats also as they tend to seize in an open state.

As an add on to this topic, how long and what temps do ppl see when it needs doing?

My DSG Ed30 will get to 90 on the dash dial within 5-6 miles at any external temp but might take 10-15mins driving (I dont push it hard when cold anyway) but if I check torque its at around 81-82 degrees. the needle never dips or drops on long cruises but I know it isnt that accurate. I've seen torque report a drop to 79 degrees at most. I'm 2+ with uprated FMIC if its any relevance. Do I need to do my 'stats you reckon?

Yes. Quite simply

Mine is up to 90 on the dash in about 2 miles (5 or so minutes) without the heaters on full blast in these colder temps... Driven incredibly gently as it won't see any revs or boost until up to temp.

Torque reports temp fluctuating between 88-92 degrees C, so you're about 10 degrees cooler than you should be

Replace the green coolant sensor whilst you are there.  It costs more than bloody thermostat unit (£45 for a 2 pin sensor  :stupid:) but you really don't want to be going back in there again having gone through the faff of 'stat replacement.

VW parts only please, no pattern sh*t.  For the same reason as above.  Nobody likes repeating work.

It's a simple job once the alternator is off, and getting that off is pretty simple.  A great time to check/replace the alternator clutch pulley and accessory belt too  :happy2:

I'll look into those as well. Have the luxury of having rotated onto a job placement that is within walking distance of home so can get the car up for a little longer than the usual frantic 'weekend scramble' of getting all work done in 2 days!

And having spent so much on it so far I wont be going with anything less than OEM. If OEM got me to 130k its certainly not done badly  :happy2:

EDIT: I feel a bit foolish now but have had a hunt around the internets, got the part numbers for the 2 inlines and main stat and the sensor but how do I tell what the OEM manufacturer is? My understanding is that VW uses certain manufacturers for certain parts. Ive seen a post suggesting BEHR might have made the thermostats but want to buy the right ones. Am I best just hitting up the dealer and accepting their parts or is there a useful guide of what company makes which OEM parts? I've used AKS as well in that past for OEM stuff so might just have to default to ordering from them.
