Hi, as long as you buy sensibly, a decent well sorted gti can be purchased for reasonable money.
I myself bought a gti at the very bottom end of the market for less than £2.5k in may last year, mechanically sound with a fsh, recent cambelt, new discs and pads all round, refurbed wheels with new tyres, the clutch was good and it drove spot on. The catch? it had done 159k, its now on 165k and all I've had to spend out on so far is a thermostat.
Basically what i'm saying is don't judge a car on its mileage, but on its condition, luckily plenty of people are scared away from anything over 100k miles, which leaves plenty of bargains for those who see past it.
