148,000 miles. Prevention work...
« on: February 20, 2018, 08:09:42 pm »
Evening all, I've had my Gti for 3 years now, managed to clock up 148K so far with very little problem. Full main dealer services every year and 10,000 miles.
I don't plan on selling the car any time soon because I love it.
Ideas on what sort of things I can do to prolong the life of it? Getting to the point now where things can start going wrong very quickly.
Cam chain and tensioner is my first port of call.
Fuel pump cam follower.
Worth removing the inlet manifold to check for carbon build up on the back of valves?

Thanks, Brad.

So I just bought mine and had a few things that needed doing.

Cam follower changed, PCV changed, oddly the timing chain and tensioner didn't need doing, it was well within spec. Had to have the VVT stuff replaced though. Also thermostat and got my inline one to do myself. Will also be checking the DV to see if it's gone....whistling so I assume so.

Also maybe suspension/bushes etc just check. My rear shocks were leaking.

I fitted a thermostat last year when I did the timing belt and water pump. I've replaced the DMF and fitted a Sachs clutch so hopefully running gear wise it should be fine for a few years.
I'll probably do the chain anyway for peace of mind. (Checked ETKA today and it was £217!)
More concerned about prolonging the engines life more than anything really!
Any problems with oil pumps?

My car has done quite a few more miles than yours. Oil burner though. I had all the suspension bushes done on the car, and a 4-wheel alignment. It made a big difference to how it drives. A bit of cash in that though, but if keeping the car its all good.
