Engine rumble at low revs when pulling away

Is the nut on there really tight? Easy to get off without an impact gun?

Thanks mate, I bought the exact same Laser branded tool from Amazon.   Is it man enough for the job?  I've read the pulley is torqued to 85NM, which is fairly tight.   

So the procedure is to hold the shaft still (T50) whilst undoing the pulley with the 33 toothed spline part of the tool? 

I'm not even convinced my pulley is knackered tbh, but thought I'd give it a try as the rumbling noise on the clutch bite at idle has bugged me for years now!

Yep thats pretty much it, they're pretty simple to test if they're gone you just slacken the belt off carefully put a screwdriver in the alternator fan to stop it moving then see if the pulley freewheels.

Does the water pump run off the belt on ours?

The water pump runs off the cambelt.   The serpentine belt is just for the alternator and A/C pump.

Yep, very short.  The power steering motor pulls a LOT of juice!!

I didn’t get a chance to look at the alternator pulley guys weather was schocking
Mine doesn’t make a noise like a pulley usually would no sqweel etc just the revs bog down a lot when pulling away

Same as mine was, I had no noise at all but was really rough pulling away.

Took my belt serpentine off at lunch time and the existing pulley is absolutely fine.   So my rumbling is something else. 

Putting the belt back on again from above is fun isn't it!?!!

Went to put a new pulley on today and mine is seized on, I put a screwdriver in the alternator and the pulley doesn’t turn either way, so I think ive found the problem.
Just need a new alternator now as the pulley is not coming off

Bummer.  I didn't bother with the screwdriver.   Just turn the pulley to the right sharply then hold it.  You should feel the pulley stay still whilst the alternator continues to turn.   Some Auto Electricians diagnose the pulley by just yanking on the belt.   They're also the best for refurbed alternators.  Horrendous money from VW!

Sorry i didnt reply with a answer guys but im afraid i don't have one plus ive got rid of the gti 
still got the alternator pulley though its a mystery i didnt solve
