Mk5 Gti Cam chain tensioner question
« on: February 21, 2018, 07:19:05 am »
Hello all. Probably been asked before but what mileage does it need replacing or is it down to just wear?

Where is the best place to buy them from maindealers or is non genuine just as good?

Also how much are Cam Chain &  Tensioner to buy?

Cheers

Mine needed done at 75k. I bought mine from a dealer and didn’t notice when viewing the car and after a week or so of getting used to the car noticed it sounded like a diesel and could hear a knocking noise from inside the cabin. A quick google search lead me this forum I showed the dealer a thread from on here and he replaced chain tensioner and adjuster with no hassle at all. So for prices I’m not sure as mine was done under warranty. But for mileage like I said mine needed done at 75k and I’ve seen others on here not needing done until over 100k.

Ok cheers for your information . I'm just curious what to look out for, mine doesn't sound like a diesel at all. I got the car on 100k since then it's now 118k and the engine still sounds the same.

Well from my experience the symptoms of it needing replaced are noticeable. Car sounds fine on tick over when cold as it should, however when it’s ticking over  at 90 degrees it sounds like a knackered diesel and also a knocking noise from inside the cabin from the passanger side of the engine.

Had mine done at 105K. Cost £366 in total. Parts were genuine from TPS.

I took mine to a specialist to get a price before goin to the dealer to complain. Was just preparing myself for worst case scenario that they wouldn’t fix it under warranty. The specialist quoted me £600 all in including the adjuster.

Crazy expensive or crazy cheap??

Looks cheap to me, four hours labour?, VAT, oil and filter.
