MILKY MAYO GUNK IN OIL FILLER CAP

Ok so apologies if I explain this wrong I’m new to here but need advice.

Yesterday I went 200 miles to go and pick up my 56 Golf GTI.
It’s at 91k and very extensive and full service history so all seems good with the car. However, I had a look at the oil today and as I opened the filler cap there was a white creamy milky gunk around the cap and a little down the neck of where the oil goes in. There’s none on the dipstick and coolant is fine. Smells fine looks fine and is the right colour.
The car doesn’t smoke at all.
I spoke to the previous owner of 3 years and he said the car had been sitting for 2 months and it was condensation.

Any ideas how to tell if this is right or how to get rid of it?

It’s just condensation build up, have you done a lot of short journeys prior to finding it?

Mine does this as well, a bit disconcerting I know but nothing to worry about.  :happy2:

Common over the winter months, especially on engines that aren't driven hard enough to evaporate the condensation off.

Yep.  The gentler it's driven, the more there will be.   You should see the Mayo in my gf's MK4 1.6.  Tons of it.   That car never goes over 3000rpm.

Mines got notably worse now I do a shorter and slower daily commute.

I had exactly same on mine (2005 AXX) when I bought it (got it noted on receipt) it had sat for a few weeks and the previous owner worked 3 miles from home. It soon went after a few hot runs and leaving it to warm up before driving on a cold day.

Out of interest.......if it was head gasket, what other symptoms would present on a mk5 gti?

If it blows at a cylinder seal into a water passage, you will get massive pressure in the expansion tank, massive coolant loss, misfiring, significant power drop and a lovely steam cleaned spark plug on that cylinder.

If it blows across water and oil passages, you will get mayo in the sump and oil in the expansion tank.

If it leaks from the edge of the gasket out of an oil or water passage, you will get oil sweats or pink crusties on the block.

Head gasket failure on the TFSI is very rare.
