Hi all.
My GTI’s ignition has failed. When you turn the key yo the start position it doesn’t even try to crank the engine over. I had this happen a couple times over the last couple months but after turning the key back and forth a couple times it started right up. Unfortunately I neglected to investigate it and then inn the weekend it failed completely.
It’s a manual transmission so it was no problem bump starting it and I did that a few more times that day as I was out visiting people. The car drives fine otherwise.
I’ve got VCDS and scanned it when home and came up with 5 faults all related to the ignition. (I’ve saved a copy of the faults but they are on my laptop at home and I’m sending this while at work so if need be I can post them later).
Anyway, after a bit of searching I thought that the problem was the ignition switch at the opposite end of the barrel to the key. I ordered the part (which was the lastest revision) from VW and installed it on Monday evening. The switch also came with a small wiring loom which goes from the ignition switch to the steering wheel module and then to somewhere else in the steering wheel column that I couldn’t quite see. However, the plug to go to the steering wheel module was different and wouldn’t fit so I just used my existing loom and only replaced the ignition switch itself. Suffice to say my car it’s still not starting.
I’ve tried switching around some of the relays that are supposedly on the ignition circuit but that’s not helped either.
Any ideas on where to go from here or what I’ve done wrong?
Cheers....
