Mk5 to Mk7

Thinking of upgrading and getting my wife a mk7 GTI. We have had our mk5 for over 5 years and love it but time to move into something newer. Is the mk7 much of a different driving experience, is it worth the extra cash or will it still feel like thw same car?

Can’t help on the gti mk7 but really they are the same inside , because I went mk5gti ❤️To mk7 R . The quality is better as is the tech in the mk7 , but to be fair the mk5 quality is really good  to .
So yes the mk7 is better because it’s alot newer , but if it’s worth paying loads for a mk7 not so sure

Thanks, that's exactly where my head is at the moment. Not sure if I can justify the £10-£12k extra just to get a few extra goodies & a few less miles.

I can imagine advertising your car and having to deal with a few timewasters and wannabe traders will help your decision process  :thinking:

In my opinion, the MK7/7.5 is only worth the upgrade if you want an improvement in perceived quality.  The MK7 is considerably quieter and more refined in the cabin.

It's a far better made car than the MK5.  Tighter, more uniform panel gaps, much sturdier interior with fewer cheap plastics that creak when push on them.

Driving dynamics are sharper than the MK5 too.  Much sharper turn-in and good composure over bumps.  Very easy to drive quickly.

Two areas that I hoped would be improved over the MK5, which haven't been, are tramlining and steering feel. 

Think of the MK5 as a game changer compared to the MK4, but think of the MK7 as merely an evolution of a MK5 (albeit a good one) and you won't be too disappointed.  But if you buy a MK7 thinking it's another game changer, you will be.

I'll put my two pennies worth in, I've just done the same route, albeit had a 2012 BMW X5 30d for 12 months in between.

I owned a Mk5 Ed 30 for 6 years and loved it, never failed to put a smile on my face. Then went a bit sensible with the X5 but what a dull car to drive.

Picked up a 2017/66 plate Mk7 R (pre facelift) yesterday after driving my father in laws 2018 7.5 R DSG a few weeks ago. I immediately put the BMW up for sale and got on the lookout for one.

As everyone else says, just an evolution of the Mk5 but with added toys and a bit comfier. Not night and day difference to drive but that engine...wow. My Edition 30 was stage 2 tuned so it wasn't slow but the R feels far more meaty even standard.

I will say the Mk7.5 is an even better place to sit with its virtual dash etc but I couldn't justify paying such a premium for one brand new.

As Mike says above.. I too went from stg2 Ed30 to MK7 GTI PP.. Both DSG. Really enjoyed my eddie,nearly 5 years of ownership and now really enjoying the MK7 farts and all.
Just waiting warranty end then off to Revo.
