18 inch wheel option
« on: March 30, 2018, 11:09:17 pm »
Evening all. My eldest son has just bought his first car after the learner car (Skoda Citygo) has been handed down to the second son. His 2 year reign in the slow lane is over. Hopefully the low power has taught him to look and plan ahead to keep up momentum.
He picked up a 2006 3door Mk5 GTi this morning. He must have done half a tank of fuel already with any excuse to drive it.
It is on 18 inch Monza wheels. My first call for help is about the wheels. Did these come with 17 inch wheels as standard and the 18 as an option or would the 18 inch wheels be an aftermarket fit. They are genuine looking Monza wheels.

The reason I ask is for the insurance as anything fitted at the time of the original purchase when new (even as an optional extra) is allowed under the policy but any aftermarket modifications are meant to be declared.

Sorry for a question on the first post but he does not want to fall foul of insurance.

I am also insured on it as a named driver and had a play in it today. Not driven one before and I was very impressed. Solid feeling car and goes quite well. Excellent pull from low revs and smooth as silk. Soaking wet roads and aquaplaned quite a bit. Tyres on it are budget tyres with decent tread. Are these cars fussy on the tyres they wear. Looking at Goodyear F1 Assymetrical 3. Happy to pay out for decent tyres.

Anyway, thanks in advance and hello to all on the forum

Hi,
I have the 18 inch monza on mine. Could be wrong but I think they were factory optional extra. Cheers

Yeah, 18” Monza was an optional extra and 17” was standard.

I  went for michelin pilot sport 4 after the reviews and ratings  on this forum. They are a  superb best tyre, the best  I have ever fitted and have been surprisingly good this winter. Roll on summer.

Thank you for the reply’s. Good news it was an option at time of purchase as it means no insurance change.
Regarding the tyres I had a chat with the guys at my local tyre place that I use for all my cars. After reading reviews and speaking to them decided to go with the Goodyear F1 asymmetric 3 to go on the front and the current front tyres to be swapped to the rear. The fronts are accelera and the rears are Three A P606 which they said were awful tyres. They only had 4mm of tread left so they are being ditched. The accelera although budget tyres are not too bad according to them and there’s loads of tread left so they will be swapped to the rear.
My lad has been cleaning it all weekend when he’s not out driving it. Best weekend ever apparently.

I recommend UHP All-Season tires if not swapping them seasonally. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ or Pirelli P Zero A/S+ are good ones and will last more miles than a full on summer tire...plus are much better in wet, cold, and snow.
