Is it time for a suspension overhaul? Opinions...
« on: April 07, 2018, 02:55:41 pm »
About 6 months ago I was at BCS and when they had my car up on the ramps I was disappointed at the surface rust on the rear suspension set up. A couple of days ago I had to strip my front brakes off and was met by this sight. Admittedly, since the car rarely gets into the garage it lives outdoors, but I didn't think the front components would look this bad. What are folks opinions, should I be looking at replacing the hub assembly etc given how corroded things are or am I fussing over a component that is sturdy enough to suffer fairly high levels of surface corrosion?

I'm looking at some frightening numbers if I go down the route of replacing everything with new. I've seen 2 GTI's in the breakers but both were on a par with my current set up.

Most hubs I've worked on are in similar shape even if just a few years old. The build up of water, road salts and brake dust leads to a lot of build up and surface corrosion. I'd strip it all down, wire brush it with brake cleaner and see how it all comes up.

If you're going to be replacing hubs, look to upgrade to lighter alloy ones.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Cheers, yeah, I've already got new discs, pads, shields. I can see some of the bolts being an absolute pain to get undone. Perhaps as you say wire wheeling it and putting a lick of POR15 will at least spruce things up, I'm certainly going to go to TPS for new bolts in most places. Geometry check when all back together!
