VW Rust 12 year guarantee
« on: April 10, 2018, 09:44:15 am »
Hi there

Newbie here, see http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,116513.0.html

Recently purchased the car and have noticed some slight bubbling under the paint on the front arches around 10p in size on one side and 5p in size on the other. Have done loads of internet research and seen other peoples experiences and armed myself with a bit of info to go down to the VW local to me to test the water and see whether I'm going to have to pay for it myself to be done.

I rang the other day and spoke to someone who said that it was a 12 year guarantee but they have now changed it to 10 years but are now doing an extra 2 years goodwill on a case by case basis. They did say bring it down so they can have a look at it.

Car is a 2007 (57) is around 10.5 years old now. Just wondering if anyone else has had much success recently with any warranty claims on paintwork as I feel like I'm going to get fobbed off now they have mentioned this 10 years!

I had mine replaced in January also a 2007 model by agnews in Belfast. When I phoned up and asked about the 12 years they also told me it was 10 with an extra 2 years good will. Take it down to them they will measure paint depth to make sure it hasn’t been reaprayed before and if it’s all good they should contact you with a date to leave it in to have them replaced. It may take a few months to hear back I contacted them August 2017 dropped it in a few days later to have the paint depth checked and then they got back to me around January this year to have them changed.

Thanks I'm going to take it down this weekend for them to look. Fingers crossed its not been sprayed before or I'll have to look at getting them replaced at a Independent sprayer

Im in the same boat though mine is August 2006 going down too Agnews when the V5 eventually arrives. Did you get any hassle from them or are they ok about it?

Got mine done on a 2006, so long as it's original paint they should honour it. I went to a larger branch as don't have a lot of confidence in the local. Good luck

No mate no hassle at all. Just booked in for the appointment the guy came out and checked the paint depth took a few notes and said everything was dead on and that he would send his info on to Volkswagen and I would hear back soon. Although like I said it was about 5 months later. A few people on here have used agnews in Belfast with no hassle.

To be fair genuine front wings (I wouldn't use cheap pattern ones) + paint isn't mega money.  Depends how much you love the car I guess.

I'm going down Saturday so will update on how I get on. Regardless of the outcome they will be done either on warranty or by an independent.

Are the pattern parts that bad then?

Been looking round and saw eurocarparts was around £120 quid for the pair.  Will look at a cost from VW or see if I can get some rust free ones from eBay.

I'm sure I remember the genuine wings being around £150 each last time I enquired, but could have gone up since.  It was a few years ago.

The reason for using genuine is the factory Electrophoretic coating process, which I doubt pattern stampings have.  It's the grey 'paint' you see on everything underneath.  Without that the panels will rot away in no time.

As you say, second hand wings the same colour as your car is the cheapest and easiest solution if you can find some!

So I went down this morning and had VW look at the wings. The guy was pretty sound to be fair, he had a look round the car, got the paint depth gauge out and checked the wings. Apparently they have been painted before but said they were under the cut off point (he said high 200s and they wouldn’t put a claim in). Was getting readings on both panels from 170-217 so he’s put the claim in and I will hear next week.

One thing that was slightly concerning is that he said this 12 year guarantee (10 years plus 2 years goodwill) has changed. He said as of January 2018 VW UK decided to stop offering the 2 years goodwill. But he said he’d put the claim in and see what happens.

So fingers crossed they agree to the work or I’m not sure if I’ve got much of a leg to stand on if they come back and reject now this 2 year goodwill has been stopped!
