looks like i got a bargain then, got my bluetooth adapter for my car kit (2007) so straight fit for £72 delivered from fleebay not brand new but not a mark on it and in original box with instructions  , plug and play

I wonder if it's possible to swap the 2005 phone kit with the 2006 one (which would then enable us to then buy the bluetooth adaptor to it). You would think the wiring would be the same and it was just the physical design that changed between 2005 and 2006.

yeah, the dealer near me hadnt a clue when i asked them about this, maybe someone else on here may know?

Got this response from VW:

Thank you for your email dated 27 April 2010, regarding the iPhone 3GS cradle for your Volkswagen Golf. Please accept my
apologies for the delay in my response.

Having spoken with my Parts Technical Team, I have been advised that we do not produce a cradle that is compatible with iPhone
3G or 3GS in the United Kingdom. However, it has been confirmed that Volkswagen are looking to offer a range of soft wear
updates in the near future to make it possible to connect the latest iPods and the iPhone, but no dates have been confirmed at
this moment in time.

I appreciate this is not the response you were hoping for and I apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I bought one of those vw bluetooth touch adapters, my car had the correct handsfree kit installed, was a 2007 car, but couldnt get my iphone 3gs to work with it. Even got the dealers to test it out etc.. ended up getting a full refund. was told to buy their proper bluetooth kit for £250 installed, or wait for the iphone cradle to be released, the picture of it is on their parts site, but no release date still.
