Oil consumption

My last question on here was regarding oil consumption in my Mk5 GTI. Last time I filled up with oil I reset the trip and have done about 600 miles. The oil level is now nearly at the min line so due a top up. Is 600 miles about average or does this seem unusual? Currently using 5w 30 by the way.

I believe VW have stated that upto 1 litre every 1k miles is acceptable in their book.... I have a stage 1 remap and am currently using 5w40. I have only owned the car 5 weeks but have probably done around 700 miles in that time. The oil level hasn't moved. As I understand it 5w40 is best suited to any modified or high mileage vehicle so may be worth giving 5w40 a go?

Yours is high but not unheard of. Do yourself a favour and service it using a good quality 5W40 oil

Many thanks for your response Martyn. The only modification on mine is the exhaust so doubt that would have any impact on oil use? It has just over 100k on the clock so relatively high. I’ll give 5w40 a go and see if it makes any difference.

Do a complete oil and filter change as there's no point just topping it up with 5w40 as you'll be mixing it.

Try Mobil 1 FS X1 5W50.  5w40 won’t do much to an engine that’s burning a litre per 1000km.

Mine seems to be using a little more oil in this recent heatwave we are currently having. I am using Castrol Edge 5w40.  My GTi is stock with 103k on the clock.

Half tempted to try 10w60 stuff that my VAG specialist recommends.

Perhaps I'm one of the lucky ones, then - my levels don't seem to have budged over a year when going from 100k to 107k miles

I'd check your fuel pump isn't leaking fuel and diluting the oil

Is there an Oil Analysis Lab there? Their result would tell you if there are signs of excessive fuel in the oil.

I would bore-scope the intake valves for carbon buildup. This points to a few possibilities though. Leaking valve stem seals and guides is one. Cracked or "no longer sealed" EVAP and PCV channels inside the valve cover is two. Turbo bearing/seal is a third possibility. Just up to you how or even if you want to sort it all. VW doesn't consider oil loss worthy of warranty replacement until it consumes 1qt/600 miles here...likely 1L/1000Km there. So you are at a level of high loss. Choose; if keeping the car and going to invest in it...start somewhere and begin eliminating the possibilities. Otherwise; sell it and move on because it isn't going to get any better without some first-aid. A full 100% synthetic oil will buy you more time...not any Oil that states 'Full Synthetic" because they only need be greater than 50% syn to be allowed to state that...but use oils that are actually 100% synthetic like LiquiMoly 5w40.
