Decent sat nav?
« on: May 01, 2018, 10:38:14 pm »
Could anyone point me in the direction of a decent sat nav ? There seems to be a lot of knock offs on eBay and it’s hard to tell what the good ones are. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply mate, but I’m after the actual factory fitted one hat came from Volkswagen. I can’t seem to find the name of it to get the correct one.

RCD330? You use your phone as the sat nave with google maps. That's about £160 with bluetooth.

RNS510 has nav built in but is probably about £350

Older RNS510 (rev A, B, C) pre-led backlight are around £300. LED ones with better processors and HDDs are £400 ish, and then the latest SSD & DAB ones are £550.

I’m selling an LED one, rev Q in the parts section

Thanks for the info mate. Would this be an easily installation process? I’m less than a week into ownership of my gti so still new to everything. At the moment I think I have a dodgy eBay knock off in there (still not sure, but feels really chea, doesn’t feel or look like a vw product). Would installing the antenna etc be relatively straight forward?

It’s very easy mate. Literally out with the old, in with the new. The GPS receiver just tucks up into the dash and the radio aerial plug and standard power/speaker harness just plug into the back of the RNS510 and off you go.

I would recommend buying a new stereo surround trim panel from VW as they break very easily when removing it. Only about £20.

Cheers mate. What about Bluetooth? I read somewhere that I may have to install a receiver or something? Or is that already in the head unit?

No Bluetoothache, you need a separate box and harness for that.  That applies to all of the VW RNS510s, certainly up to MK7 at least.

I’m a bit confused.. there is menu for “phone” on the one you have for sale. Is this useless then?

I got the cheapest, decent brand, Android Auto unit I could get.  It's not perfect in non-Android auto mode, but works very well for sat nav and spotify.  No car nav can touch google maps.

Yes it will not function unless you install the separate Bluetooth module. If the idea of wiring a separate Bluetooth module is not your thing then you're probably better off purchasing the RNS310/315 instead which has Bluetooth built-in but will still need an external microphone. The RCD330 with App Connect has both Bluetooth and Microphone built-in and will pair with your smartphone to have Apple Maps/Google Maps/Waze navigation displayed on the unit.
