Always wanted to do a build thread as I'm a big forum follower, but never got round to doing one myself...

I'm a relatively new member, having joined in 2016 I never actually used my account. I'm now back in the drivers seat of a Mk5 3dr Gti DSG so thought this is the perfect time to start one!

I've owned a fair few cars in the past 5-6 years, the list is as follows...

Mini Cooper 1.6 (No picture) -

Renault Clio Sport 182 Cup in Racing blue -



My first Mk5 Golf GTi - Stage 1 Manual -





Then onto my BMW M135i Auto -



Then leased a Polo GTi Manual -



Then an R56 Mini Cooper JCW -



& Finally.... onto my brand new Mk5 GTi - DSG, 3dr, Steel Grey.

I got the car at an absolute steal (at trade price) it's got 95k on the clock but has one of the most extensive histories of any car i've ever seen, full VW service history which has been done every 6-8k miles. It's had two cambelt changes, regular DSG services, you name it, it's been changed! It drives like new and has only 2 previous owners from new. One of which I believe was actually VW themselves...

There are obviously a few cosmetic things that need sorting, mainly the diamond cut alloy wheels which have unfortunately gone rather corroded... The headlights need the old buff up, and in general it just need a proper clean. I'm going to give it plenty of TLC and get it restored to its former glory!

My plans so far:

- Refurbish  the alloys (in progress)
- Full service, DSG, Cam follower, DV, PCV & full oil and filter change with spark plugs etc.
- Full correction detail to bring the paintwork back to life.
- Stage 1 map along with a new map on the DSG.
- Exhaust
- Springs

Obviously as i'm sure, there will be plenty more going on but they are my main plans at the moment! Here are the only photo's I have of it so far...







With the alloys being a huge bug bearer to me, I got it booked in straight away to get sorted & i've opted for a Gloss Black finish with an added clear coat, here are some photo's of the finished wheels... waiting to go back on the tyres & then the car.

I only picked the car up on Saturday just gone, so i've not had chance to do an awful lot to it as it's been in since Monday having its wheels refurbished.





I will be keeping you all updated on my plans and progress over the course of ownership! I am thoroughly looking forward to it...

Spent a bit of time on the car over the weekend and i'm over the moon with how it looks!

A close up of the newly re-furbished wheels on the car, i'll get a full car shot at some point shortly.



I then set to work on getting the headlights restored to their 'former glory' they suffered from the usual and quite common corrosion. I set to masking the lights off, and buffing them with some Poor-boys wax and the machine polisher, I had to do this a couple of times as mine were really bad but they came up absolutely spot on. For now they'll do the job until I pick up some proper Xenons.

Finally got round to fitting my Pressed Plates and getting rid of the rather silly looking short ones... (from my JCW in which they looked really good on, not so much on the MK5)





As you can see by the last picture, I also set out to getting the exhaust sorted out.. Have to admit it's probably one of the dirtiest exhaust tips i've ever seen.. it was so dirty i actually ran out of time to even finish one, let alone start on the other. Taking a fair bit of elbow grease to get it all back to its former glory, it's almost making me think it would be easier to just buy a new system  :grin:

Car is booked in for it's service tomorrow, it's not due one but i wanted to get it done anyway.

- Full service, including new oil and filters, iridium spark plugs, etc.
- New rear left ABS sensor as mine is faulty (throwing up error codes and warning lights intermittently)
- New Cam follower, DV and PCV.
- DSG Oil and filter change

Hopefully be a much smoother car after a bit more TLC. Then the following week it's booked in with the specialist detailer in my area to get a full exterior/interior valet, including the seats, engine bay, full bodywork polish etc. (paint is surprisingly in very good condition for a 12 year old car), should really set the car off after that!

Has anyone got any other suggestions for cheap/easy modifications to do? Even really small things that might make a huge difference.

On order.

- VW Bottle opener for the cup holder.
- GTi seat inserts.
- New VW Badges for my keys.

Close up shots of my new pressed plates, I also used some Auto Finesse trim reviver and have to say i'm incredibly impressed!! All of my plastics are now a lovely shade of black.



The car has also been in today for a good full service, including a cam follower change and an ABS sensor replacement.

Turns out the Cam follower was pretty worn...

My GTi seat inserts arrived from China yesterday.. have to admit, I don't know why they didn't do something like this from factory? They make quite a big difference when you open the door.

When I bought the car it had a Parrot kit installed, unfortunately it didn't want to link up to my phone and it was incredibly bodged into place, someone had actually drilled it into the A pillar of the car, it wasn't secure and didn't work.. set to taking this out yesterday too, I was genuinely shocked at the amount of wires and the amount of cable ties that were holding it all into place haha. Luckily, it's all out now and will shortly be replacing my headunit for a Bluetooth double DIN anyway..



Also, if anyone is looking for a subtle alternative to a phone-holder, I found this on Amazon and have to say I am very very impressed with the quality of it. It works by sticking a magnetic plate into the back of your phone case, and then subsequently sitting on the little circle magnet which is attached through the air-vents, I was sceptical at first but having been giving it some round the country roads yesterday and not once did it move, i'm suitably impressed!





Finally, in other news.. My Ram-Air filter induction kit will arrive this morning to replace my broken engine cover and standard air box, i'll be looking to get that fitted either tonight or over the weekend so will update you on that once its done. The car in general is driving so much nicer after having a full service, it feels smooth, power delivery is good, really enjoying being back in a MK5!

Weekend plans:

- Fit the new induction kit and piping
- Remove the lower grill & spray gloss black to match the top grill
- Full wash and detail

On order currently:

- R8 Coil Packs
- R8 Oil Cap
- Uprated PCV
- Open Fog light grills

On the lookout for:

- Suspension setup, preferably something like Eibach Springs 20-30mm & Bilstein Dampers.. If anyone knows of anyone selling these let me know.

Those GTI inserts are lovely. I've had some for so long that I've forgotten that they weren't in there when I bought the car.

They were one of the first things I ordered (because I know they take nearly a month to arrive haha) they are so nice and for a fiver you can't really go wrong.

Amazing they didn't put something in from factory, the insert looks like they were going to.. then forgot  :signLOL:

So, this weekends update...

Brand new RamAir filter = Fitted.

What a lovely bit of kit, all be it quite fiddly and difficult at times, mainly getting the old rubber piping off the turbo inlet, and putting the new silicone piping on the same bit, so fiddly and difficult to get to with tools. However, it's all done & makes a huge difference to the noise. Has anybody else got one of these fitted and noticed a massive increase in noise? Sounds like i've got a blow off valve now...

Going to take another quick look at it tonight because i can't help but think the connection onto the turbo inlet may be slightly loose!

I'm 99% it's all fitted properly, I had to push the pipe coming off the inlet down a bit this morning but It was definitely all fitted correctly last night, as there is nowhere to screw it in at the top end, you're kind of relying on the design to hold it in place.

Also because of the huge difference in noise, i thought it might not be on correctly, but from looking around it sounds like they all sound the same!

Yes i'd definitely be interested, how much and when will they be available?
